On Saturday December 9th at 3 AM in the morning someone made an attempt to murder Devon Gray. Devon had left his Mom’s house earlier where he had been staying while renovating his newly purchased home. Upon return, Devon was ambushed before entering the house. The suspect was hiding, waiting, and wielding a metal baseball bat. The suspect ran up on Devon and the first swing targeted the back of Devon’s head. The result of that first swing left Devon defenseless and the suspect resumed swinging the bat approximately 45 more times targeting Devon’s head and groin for the next minute and ten second. Devon’s Mom and significant other were in the garage and heard the sounds of the metal bat connecting with Devon’s body. After opening the garage door the suspect fled and Devon’s Mom’s significant other pursued the suspect and was able to get the critical information needed to make a quick apprehension of the suspect.
Devon was left lying in a pool of his own blood, unconscious, his family not knowing if he would survive after the brutal attack. Devon was rushed to the hospital where he was placed in a medically induced coma. Devon would then undergo multiple surgeries while in a coma to begin addressing his injuries. Doctor’s noted that Devon had multiple facial and skull fractures. Over the next couple of days Devon’s family waited in agony not knowing when or if Devon would recover from being hit by a baseball bat nearly 50 times. Family and friends rallied around Devon in support. There was always someone by Devon’s side; his hospital room was never empty. After about 48 hours Devon was breathing on his own again and Doctors were able to remove his breathing tube. Devon’s family and friends continued to talk about how strong Devon was and Devon’s strength was shining through. Hour by hour Devon’s friends and family watched as his strength and determination persevered. Devon began opening his eyes, and sitting up. Devon kept attempting to get out of the bed even though he still had no idea what happened, where he was, and couldn’t speak yet. Day after day Devon’s condition improved. Devon now can speak, but not to his full capabilities before the attack. Although, friends and family say he is still as spunky as he ever was.
Devon is currently employed as a Detention Deputy at Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office. Devon also used to work as a security guard at North Memorial Hospital. He is in college working towards finishing a degree and is aspiring to go into Law Enforcement. Devon’s dream is to eventually become a detective. Devon has always enjoyed many physical activities like boxing, working out and has loved playing basketball and football for most of his life. Devon even just purchased his first home. Devon’s family, friend’s, and coworkers know him as kind, patient, hardworking, and devoted to what he puts his heart into.
At the age of 23 there is a lot of unknowns for Devon’s future right now. Devon’s road to recovery will be long and difficult due to the damage from the brutal attack. Devon has been left with brain trauma and some of that trauma has impacted his ability to utilize the left side of his body. This GoFundMe me was setup to assist Devon with the large amount of hospital bills that are going to accrue. We want to help this young man continue to pursue his dreams. Someone tried to take this man’s life and our communities goal is to rally around Devon so that he can continue to give life to those around him as he has done in the past.
If you are unable to donate, that is absolutely okay. All we ask is that you share Devon’s story so that the next person can.
Thank you! ❤️
