Supporting South Korea's Wildfire Recovery

Hi, we're Seok Joon and Federica. From May 1st to May 6th, we'll be cycling from Seoul to Busan to raise funds for the recovery of communities affected by the devastating wildfires that spread across South Korea recently.

In March 2025, South Korea was struck by the most devastating wildfires in its history. More than 20 separate fires broke out across the central and southeastern regions — including areas like Uiseong, Sancheong, Andong, and Ulsan. Fueled by strong, gusty winds and dry conditions, the fires spread rapidly, turning into massive, fast-moving infernos that overwhelmed communities with little time to react.

The destruction was heartbreaking. At least 32 people lost their lives, and over 37,000 residents were forced to evacuate. Nearly 95,000 hectares of land — including forests, farmland, and homes — were scorched. Cultural heritage was also lost, including the destruction of Gounsa Temple, a sacred site that had stood for over 1,300 years.

What makes this disaster even more painful is that many of the affected areas are rural, where families depend entirely on their homes and land for survival. For some, the fire didn’t just destroy their house — it took away their livelihood, their security, and the result of a lifetime’s work. Generations of farming, community ties, and hard-earned land disappeared overnight. The damage is not just material; it’s deeply emotional, as people are now faced with the overwhelming task of starting from scratch, with little to fall back on.

To support those affected, we are taking on a personal challenge: we’re cycling 633 kilometers from Seoul to Busan over the course of six days, passing through some of the regions impacted by the fires. Along the way, we want to raise funds and awareness for the people whose lives have been turned upside down by the fires.

The money raised will go toward reconstruction efforts — helping to rebuild homes, support farmers, and offer relief for those who’ve lost everything. Every donation, no matter the size, helps someone take a step toward recovery.

피해를 입은 이들을 지원하기 위해, 우리는 개인적인 도전에 나섭니다: 우리는 6일에 걸쳐 서울에서 부산까지 633킬로미터를 자전거로 달릴 예정이며, 산불의 영향을 받은 몇몇 지역을 지나게 됩니다. 이 여정을 통해 우리는 산불로 인해 삶이 송두리째 뒤바뀐 사람들을 위한 기금과 인식을 높이고자 합니다.
