Fundraiser for the treatment of David Muniz
Donation protected
In 2015 my father and my hero, officer David Muniz responded to a report of a belligerent man with a gun in Cleveland’s fourth district. The suspect was begging to be shot (suicide by cop) and while my father attempted to console the distressed man, he shot my dad in the chest.
My dad was saved by his bulletproof vest, but during the x-ray to assess any further damage, the doctors discovered cancer on my father's lymph nodes. My father who has never smoked and had consistently exercised his whole life was shocked but grateful that this potential deadly encounter gave him and his doctors an earlier opportunity to fight this life threatening disease .
My father has a few passions in life; loving his family, serving his community, reading comic books, and working out. While receiving chemotherapy over the next several years he took solace in the support from his family; gym and home, and the fact that he was able to relieve stress and maintain his health as best as he could considering the battle that was being fought in his body; chemo vs the cancer.
My dad continued to strive to support the community of Cleveland especially in these difficult times with the relationship with cops and the public at large, he wants to be on the streets to be that example for all to strive for a better Cleveland together, Much like the heroes in his comics. Despite the chemo and losing nearly 40lbs, he rarely missed a day of work from his department. My father would eventually beat the cancer, or so we thought.
In October of 2019 my father found out the cancer was back, and not only spread but was more aggressive than before. In fighting this more aggressive attack by cancer my father will not be able to work for almost six months. My dad has always taught me to work hard because, “no one is going to give you anything” and “you have to earn everything you get in this life” and these lessons have stuck with me, but a college student who is close to graduating and starting my life of services but less dangerous as a teacher (I hope). I have very little money and I know my dad would never ask for help but I don’t have many options so I created this GoFundMe because despite putting on a tough facade I am afraid for my father and I know the stress of finance does not help with the healing process.
I know my dad needs as much support as he can get. I’m not expecting much but I hope that if you can help my father out in his time of need, as he has attempted to help out so many people over the years as an officer. From mentoring wayward kids, to donating to those in need and the list goes on, and we are sure there are plenty of things he never tells us because we would worry about him working in one of the most violent cities in the nation.
But even in the comics sometimes or heroes need a little help. I will appreciate any donation no matter how big or small. If you are not in a position to donate funds, I would greatly appreciate if you could share this post on at least one of your social media platforms. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. Update: In the early summer my father finished his chemo. During his recovery he soon came down with a respiratory illness and had to be intubated. Although he had a less than 10% chance of survival he pulled through and is back home with us today. Thank you to all those who have donated this far!
