TUNAWIRI - GRASSROOTS GENDER JUSTICE NETWORK
Donation protected
Tunawiri is a Kenyan organization providing support to a network of community-based, mission-driven organizations in Nairobi. Through this network, Tunawiri provides the expertise required to help these organizations maximize the impact of their work, while also bringing together organizations with similar objectives so that they can learn from each other and work together to achieve change within their communities.
We are selective in the organizations that we support TO ENSURE THAT THEY;
- Provide opportunities for vulnerable community members to overcome economic and societal barriers. For example, they support victims to sustainably remove themselves from domestic violence.
- Are hyper-local. These organizations are located within the communities they serve.
- Are transparent in how they manage organizational resources – providing visibility into how donations are used to support specific individuals.
We support these organizations to review and improve how they are managing operations as well as to improve their fundraising and advocacy efforts. Tunawiri is currently fundraising for core organizational support as well as resources for two specific initiatives: Usikimye and Afroidea. These two organizations are key partners in working towards ending sexual and gender - based violence.
- Usikimye is an organization in Nairobi that provides a safehouse for individuals looking to escape gender based violence moreso rape survivors and domestic violence survivors. You can read more about their GBV rescues and the organization responsible for this here: usikimye.org and also follow up on their amazing work at https://www.facebook.com/usikimye/ Their immediate need is to expand their safe house, basic needs like food and mental health wellness and recovery to survivors.
- Afroidea is a network member that provides psycho-social support and shelter to queer victims of gender based violence. This support is particularly important in the time of COVID as social distancing can exacerbate violence in the home and further isolate vulnerable sexual minorities from the community.
- Mathare Social Justice Centre is an initiative by young members of the community to promote social justice in Mathare. We supported them to organize the black lives matter protests in Nairobi and Mombasa and to support the mothers of the victims of police brutality.
In the wake of COVID 19, Kenya witnessed a 42% increase in gender based violence between the months of February and March. Tunawiri is broadly supporting local organizations to heighten awareness of the measures required for Corona Virus prevention, to increase access to psycho-social support services by distributing pamphlets with more information along with food distribution channels, and to plan for domestic violence safety measures.
Tunawiri is also advocating for an improved response to gender based violence from the Government of Kenya.
We bring big dreams, professional skills, and hope for the victims of violence, particularly children. Your donations will extend the reach of gender based violence support and advocacy measures in Kenya.
