Hello relatives and friends! Our beloved Steve Martinez is standing his ground and refusing to testify before a federal grand jury about the historic stand against the Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL), where thousands gathered to protect the Mni Sose (Missouri River), the water of the Standing Rock Sioux Nation.
The Feds are still grasping straws, trying not to be held accountable for the terrible things law enforcement did to peaceful, prayerful Water Protectors.
On February 3rd, 2021, Steve invoked his First and Fifth Amendment rights before a grand jury in North Dakota, and has been held in custody since. This grand jury seems to be trying to shift the blame for the 2016 injury of Water Protector Sophia Wilansky, who has filed a federal civil rights lawsuit alleging her arm was mutilated by a concussion grenade shot by a Morton County sheriff’s deputy. Throughout the resistance to DAPL, law enforcement attacked hundreds of unarmed people with impact munitions, explosive grenades, chemical weapons, high pressure fire hoses in sub-freezing temperatures, and have faced zero accountability.
Steve is not collaborating with this grand jury because as our families learned at the second Wounded Knee, Feds twist our words and use them against us. There are no charges against Steve, but he will be imprisoned unless he agrees to testify, or until the investigation terminates in up to 18 months. Under COVID-19, imprisonment is even more dangerous, but Steve is committed to protecting our community and resisting this grand jury: “The state should not be intimidating people and trying to blame us for the harm they caused. I didn’t want to lose my freedom, but they are not going to break me.”
Steve has the strength of his Pueblo, CO roots, where as a youth he helped write the Aztec Report and created art for his community. Steve is a United States Marine Veteran. He came to Standing Rock to stand up for Unci Maka, Grandmother Earth, and Mni, water for our future generations.
Please support his resistance and commitment to protecting our water, our land, and our people! Anything you can share will go towards the ongoing needs of his family and partner Leta Killer during this trying time. We hope that seeds of awareness & unification will spread all over the world and support voices to speak out and protect our natural resources for all of our generations to come.
Keep Steve in your thoughts and prayers & also the Water Protectors & Attorneys still fighting for justice❣️Pilamiya Ye! Thank you! Mni Wiconi! Water is Life! Mitakuye oyasin! We are all related!❤️✊
