Surgery Funding For Spinal Cord Injury Patient

My name is Mr Sunday Bassey, I am a 37 years old Accountant with a passion for Electrical
Electronics/Engineering and Traveling, but I have been paralysed from my chest down as a result of a ghastly automobiles accident which I severed my spinal cord and have been bed ridden for the past two
years.
THE AUTOMOBILE ACCIDENT THAT BROKE MY SPINAL CORD
On December 27th, 2018, I was involved in an automobile accident after spending Christmas a few days with my Mum whom I had not seen for 5 years. The accident occurred when the commercial bus I was traveling in had a tyre blow- out while travelling at over 100 Kilometres/Hour and sommersalted several
times ; I was violently flung from the vehicle and I landed on my head. The last sensation I had was similar to a light switch being turned off and I felt my body going numb; it was then I realised I might had severely
injured my spinal cord.
The Emergency response was extremely slow and non – functional and, I was only seen by a Neuro –Surgeon 6 days after the accident had occurred. I was initially transported in the open back of a goods truck to the nearest Hospital (Ugep General Hospital) which was about 3 Kilometers away ; I could not breath and the Hospital had no oxygen nor life support equipment.  I was then referred to the University of
Uyo Teaching Hospital (https://www.uuthuyo.net/), about 160 Kilometers away; the 3 hours 45mins journey in the makeshift ambulance left me even more truamatised. Unfortunately, they had no equipment to perform CT Scan, MRI and X- Rays and I was then referred to Memfys Hospital for Neurosurgery , Enugu
( https://memfys.net/) where I eventually saw a Neuro Surgeon for the first time and then had CT Scan, MRI and X-rays Performed on 2nd
January 2019 ; 6 days after I had the accident and transferred over 217 Kilometers in the most appalling conditions.
The results revealed that the level at which the cervical region of my spine was injured was rated C4, this had seriously affected my upper and lower limbs and, the ability to control bowel and bladder movements; it had left me effectively paralysed from chest down. On 8th January 2019, I underwent a 5-hour surgery
and was later informed that the surgery was successful; I had high hopes but then, I was told that I had only 8% chance of ever walking again. This left me crushed and devastated; however, I believe in miracles and
hope to walk again.

MY CURRENT MEDICAL SITUATION
Three weeks after my surgery, I was discharged from Memfys Hospital and transferred to a local hospital called Saint Dominic Hospital, Uyo, where I have continued my recovery and rehabilitation, closer to my family for the past two years. I have subsequently lost my job and salary earnings. I currently require round – the – clock care. My condition is quite fluid and depending on the need or situation, I attended to by a Neuro – Surgeon, a Physiotherapist, a Nurse or, a Carer. Thankfully and after many months of physiotherapy, I have regained some feeling and functionality in my left hand but, there is still no strength in both hands. I am also unable to sit or stand. I usually experience a lot of spasm which makes it hard for me to sleep at day or night. Hence, due to my inability to sleep, my blood pressure spikes
daily; most days it gets as high as 230/124 and the doctor says it can lead to a stroke. 

THE NEXT STEPS IN MY RECOVERY, REHABILITATION AND, CARE: 
After a review by a Neurologist, I have been informed that I will need another CT and MRI scans which will
ascertain the recovery level on the injured spine and the next stage of my treatment.
HOW YOU CAN ASSIST ME
It costs the equivalent of One Thousand Dollars ($1,000) per month to pay for the cost for my Carer, medication, medical supplies, Physiotherapist, Nurse and, periodical check-up by a Neuro - Surgeon.
