Surgery to get Daniel Ross Upright Again!
Donation protected
Thank you all so much for responding to our request for help to get medical treatment in New York. As you can see, this GoFundMe was a complete success.
This surgery is expensive. The fundraiser was done to make getting vertical again possible. More than that was achieved. Hundreds of people donated and sincerely wished the best for us and it feels really good. Again, thank you so much.

Daniel's story:
In January 2020, Daniel had an accident while skiing that left him with a sore neck. Over time, symptoms gradually worsened to sickness and debilitating fatigue, and then eventually an inability to be upright at all without suffering severe symptoms including intense headaches, loss of speech, lack of motor control, and full body spasms.
Daniel has been essentially bedridden for one year. He is unable to look left or right. If he does need to be upright for a short time, he can do so very carefully while wearing a stabilizing neck brace and using a cane. Put simply, his accident has left him unable to support the weight of his head.
Daniel is a proud Nova Scotian entrepreneur, and started his business (Ross Screenprint) when he was 16 years old. Thirty years later, he still runs his business in Antigonish, and has set up a horizontal office to continue his work. He uses an overhead mounted monitor, and a clear plexiglass shelf for paperwork.
As a small business owner, husband, and father of three, getting healthy is his #1 priority. He has seen many specialists and health professionals since this all began and has connected with people all over the world that have suffered similarly. Daniel’s condition is very, very rare – but help is available!
There is a surgery called Craniocervical Fusion, which fuses the base of the skull to the spine enabling the head to be supported while upright. There are eight surgeons in the world that specialize in this procedure. One of them – Dr. Bolognese in NY – has accepted Daniel as a patient. He believes Daniel’s situation is severe, but his prognosis is excellent. He plans to fix him in mid-September!
This is a long, complicated procedure and does not come without risk. However, Daniel needs help. It is our fear that if he does not accept this help now, he will risk permanent damage as his spasms are progressively worsening. Without this surgery Daniel will not get better.
The tough part is that surgery alone will cost nearly $300,000. Over the past year Daniel and Shauna have worked tirelessly to have his very rare condition and surgical solution recognized by Nova Scotia healthcare. With the support of their friends and family, they are going to New York without provincial funding.
