Elaborate Meal Film budget

Introduction

This film is an experimental project with themes of surrealism, horror and female rage. The hard-working team hopes to make something strong despite not having many resources. This film explores the turning point of a relationship through the use of surrealism, psychological thriller and horror. Inspired by Jordan Peele’s ability to use horror and visuals to recreate a true feeling and experience, this film aims to do the same; we want to convey reality in a world that is truly surreal.

Synopsis / The Story

A young woman tries to revive the relationship she once had with her partner through a romantic meal in a restaurant they used to go to. As each dish is served, the restaurant becomes more surreal and unsettling; Our protagonist is forced to look inwardly as stakes rise throughout the evening.

Creative Vision

In this film we’ll manipulate shadows and light to play across the restaurant’s surfaces, creating distortions and filmed through surrealist reflections, giving the film a dream-like look.

Writer’s note:

It has been playful and refreshing for creative work to start with a sense of self; I’m grateful for the dedication and love from the wonderful team around me. The work is an amalgamation of images and representations of some of my own memories, perhaps in the wrong order. There is a story in this and maybe you’ll see it. Maybe you’ll walk away incredibly confused. Either way, thank you for experiencing it with me.

When Bethany first handed me the script for "Elaborate Meal," I was deeply immersed in my own personal quest, grappling with the darker aspects of myself that emerged in my relationships. It's easy to point fingers for the way we're treated, yet confronting and parting with parts of ourselves—whether it's ending a relationship or distancing from a family member who doesn't love us as we need—carries profound grief. "Elaborate Meal" delves into these themes with keen insight, and I'm thrilled at the prospect of bringing it to the screen. I believe this film will resonate deeply, offering solace to those wrestling with their own transformative journeys. It's a testament to the power of cinema crafted by those who've navigated similar paths of self-discovery and change, illuminating the understanding that none of us are truly alone in our struggles. Thank you for showing your unwavering support towards all kinds of storytellers. They help us realise the meaning in our own life stories.
