SUSAN'S STORY:

“I’m sorry to tell you this but it is cancer. “ those eight words brought more fear into my mind and my heart than I ever would have imagined. This is a short version of my journey thus far.

Late summer, I went to APRN with a head cold and felt a small marble size lump right above my collar bone. Over the course of the next month and a half it doubled in size. So the testing began. Within one week, I was at a surgeon. A biopsy was performed about a week after that. Poorly differentiated carcinoma and metastatic cancer is all the general surgeon could say. Doctors are not sure where it started but it spread to this lymph node system. So of course my mind FREAKS out, but being quiet, I tried to keep it all inside. More testing begins. No other signs of malignancy are showing up anywhere in my body. So, 4 business days later, I am in an oncologist’s office.

On October 23, as my mom, Dawn, Maggie and myself were having lunch the word plan was just so much on our hearts. Because we desperately wanted one. A waiter walks by with the white sweatshirt with a red box that said “Gods Plan.” I received a text from an unexpected person where he is just raving on Gods Plan - having no idea what was going that day. When I walk into Dr. Chua's office, he begins "I have Plan A and I have Plan B." We knew we were right where God wanted us to be. I am 39 years old and I never expected a Plan A, Plan B, or any Cancer Plan! Michael and I are both planners. We like to know next steps. And NO ONE COULD GIVE US ANY. But if there is one that I have always believed is God. Has. A. Plan. And even the nasty stuff is on the timeline. And He knows how to use it to His Glory. So Mike and I prayed and we just held firm to that. Our families and friends rallied. Our church families and others began praying.

With all the surgeries, biopsies, CT scans, ultrasounds and assessments the cancer is still an unknown primary source. So what plan do we follow? My chemo and radiation plan has already started. My hair loss plan has already happened. The side effect plan has been terrible. The exhaustion plan has been overwhelming. I couldn't have prepared myself for THIS plan.

This is the beginning of my story but this is also my family, friends, and coworkers journey. This has affected everyone in my life around me and they have jumped on this journey with me full force! And that is why I am telling my story. Cancer affects everyone that is part of your life and anyone that has experienced this like me, needs the support even when you think you don't. This journey is far from over and I know I have a long few months and maybe my plan will include a Plan C, D, E but I will continue to fight and share my story.
