Hello! My name is Sushant Singh and I come from a small village in Western Uttar Pradesh, India and currently studying in the LLM program in (Human Rights, Conflict and Justice) at SOAS, University of London, and I need your help and support to complete my degree!
I need your help to pay my tuition fees.
Fees & Living Expenses:
The total sum of course fees, college community charge, and college deposit come to 23680 pounds, equivalent to 24,47,562 Indian Rupees. I have already submitted the first installment of £ 12757 pounds and I need to pay the second installment of £10,922.77 by 14th February 2022.
I am working part-time to secure my living expenses and other costs, but I really need your support for the tuition fees.
The only reason I could reach SOAS, London was because I was helped by the contributors in my fundraising. I pray for little more support for the last time. I shall be forever grateful to you.
My parents have worked really hard to fund my school fees. They worked as a security guard/ domestic labor to support my education so far. But for my higher education, it is beyond their means and that is why I am seeking your kind support. Introduction!
Since 2011, I have been engaged in student activism, advocacy, and community building against caste and underprivileged communities.
After finishing my schooling, I appeared for the All India Law Entrance Test (AILET) where I secured an All India Rank of 3 (three) and gained admission into one of India’s top law schools, the National Law University Delhi. Thus, I became the first person in my family to attend college and the first person to NLU Delhi from my region. I am a first-generation learner.
In my first year of undergraduate college, I took a personal loan of 1.5 lakh rupees to pay the fees. Later, I was awarded a full scholarship by the Government of India (Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment). Thanks to the Government of India scholarship and the support of our Vice-Chancellor Prof. (Dr.) Ranbir Singh, I was able to complete my BA LLB (Hons.) degree.
During Studying at College!
It was in college that I set out a life and a career plan dedicated to the service of the marginalised. I worked with prominent human rights and non-profit organizations, such as the Delhi State Legal Services Authority (DSLSA), NALSA, Indus Action, Increasing Diversity by Increasing Access to the law (IDIA), and Aaghaz Study Circle. I also worked as a researcher with the Death Penalty Research Project, based out of NLU Delhi (also known as Project 39A). My work and my legal education gave me a vocabulary to articulate the demand for social and economic justice.
I also founded two organisations- the Ambedkar Periyar Phule Study Circle (APPSC) at NLU Delhi, which I set up with the purpose of making the NLU academic curriculum more accessible to first-generation students from marginalised communities, and the Dishayein Project, a project to spread legal awareness among students studying in government schools.
Work Done so far!
I have always been interested in social service therefore after my graduation I chose a path towards public service through litigation.
Since graduating from college,
• I have actively been taking pro bono cases, counseling, and defending persons falsely implicated in criminal offenses (Theft, Grievous Hurt, Murder, and Matrimonial Disputes).
• I am currently representing EWS law aspirants in a case against the Faculty of Law, Delhi University at Delhi High Court. Delhi University has not, as yet, implemented the EWS reservation, thus violating the fundamental rights of hundreds of students who have been denied admission.
• I have represented school students to help them obtain their documents from the CBSE Board.
• I also work with DSLSA as a Para Legal Volunteer and conduct legal aid and awareness sessions. I have been involved in various projects of DSLSA oriented towards enhancing legal awareness of the inmates at the Tihar Jail.
• I have been representing the underprivileged on various levels and have advocated for justice and tried to shield them from the abuses of the law.
I have never let my economic conditions become a hurdle in my quest for quality education. I am committed to studying more and exploring my areas of interest (human rights and criminal law) internationally so that I can inform my legal practice and work towards Constitutional Maker’s dreams for the future of India. To pursue the same, I applied for the LLM programs at several UK Universities and received admission offer letters for the LLM course from the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London, and from the Cardiff University in Wales.
Research Interests & Life Goals!
I have been working in the field of social justice, human and constitutional rights for almost a decade now, as a volunteer during my school and college days, and now as a passionate advocate representing critical rights issues in our courts of law. I am willing to do the same for the rest of my life- to work to empower marginalised peoples and communities and to ensure that our constitutional ideal of access to justice for all is actualised and given meaning.
Belonging to a vulnerable community myself, I understand the importance of law in empowering people and aiding their quest for justice. My education and my advocacy is directed towards strategic tackling of intersectional disadvantage and discrimination, and my efforts are directed solely towards making sure that our society’s commitment to justice is given strength.
Prayer!
I have exhausted all possible funding options. I write to request you to help me fund my education, either by means of a study grant or a scholarship. Studying in the United Kingdom is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for me, with tremendous potential to inform my practice of human rights law and inspire members of my community to pursue higher education.
I am attaching my enrolment letter and email from the university for your perusal. I would be ever so grateful if you could give your due consideration to my request and help me serve my country in the best possible way I know- through advocacy for justice.
Any contribution will help, and I sincerely thank you if you can spread this campaign, move it through your networks or help in any other way. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to me at [email redacted], as I would like to be as transparent as possible with this campaign and its funding request!
Warm Regards,
Sushant Singh
