Susie Symmes Westbrook needs lifesaving surgery

My name is Susan Tierney Baca and I am requesting help in raising money for my child-hood friend Susie Symmes Westbrook. Susie has been battling horrific health issues including cancer, lymphedema, and has endured 15 major surgeries and long hospitalizations over the last 20 years. Her passion for life, family and friends has created an amazing death-defying strength. Sadly, a surgery in August of 2020 left her partially paralyzed and in need of a second complicated abdominal surgery, that her doctors feel cannot be done successfully in New Mexico. Susie and her longtime partner, Lee are making the medical journey to Ohio this summer. She is scheduled for a major a surgery at the Cleveland Clinic that could save her life. The Cleveland Clinic is rated as one of the top surgical facilities in the world and is her best hope to stay alive.
This surgery will require extensive travel, lodging at the hotel (attached to the clinic) during her medical evaluation prior to and her post surgery care. This is estimated to take at least 2 months. Lee will stay with her and take a leave of absence from his job at UNMH as the surgical outcome is greatly improved when a patient has family support.
Susie is the only child of a single mother who died when Susie was still a young woman. Her two young beautiful sons are by her side whenever possible but both live and work outside the state. Her family is the community that she has created through her enduring friendships, professional and charitable work .
Her wonderful friends will help maintain her home and beloved pet family while they are gone, but they cannot begin to shoulder the costs she will be facing. Susie, a beloved interior designer who has tried to work throughout her medical challenges. She will be unable to work during this period and her savings are complelely depleted. The expense of repeated travel, medical costs, and her after care and lodging will be astounding.
My love for Susie prompted me to attempt to connect, not with strangers but the vast amount of people who know and love Susie. As a friend of many years I am in awe of her love for life, family, humanity in general, and her generosity, her artistic talent, her positive loving spirit and her loyalty to those she loves. Any money raised on this site will go towards helping Susie meet her expenses so she can focus solely on surviving the surgery, her recovery and healing, thank you for donating whatever you are able.
