Who We Are and Our Mission
Kimuli Collections is a unique eco-fashion brand based in Uganda, dedicated to transforming lives and the environment. Our mission is to empower disabled women by providing them with valuable tailoring skills and employment opportunities, while also tackling the pressing issue of plastic waste through creative recycling.
We aim to raise $25,000 to fund training programs for disabled women in tailoring sustainable clothing from recycled materials. This initiative not only equips them with the skills to earn a living but also contributes to a cleaner and greener planet.
Why This Project Matters to Me
Growing up in poverty as an orphan, I was raised by my incredible grandmother in a remote village in Uganda. She was a tailor and my greatest inspiration. Despite her limited means, she taught me the value of resourcefulness. Together, we would gather plastic waste and fabric scraps to create my own toys and dolls. What others saw as trash, I saw as potential. This experience shaped my perspective on waste and ignited my passion for environmental conservation and creative reuse.
At the age of 20, driven by these early lessons and the desire to make a difference, I co-founded Kimuli Collections. Our goal was to address two critical issues: the overwhelming plastic waste crisis in Uganda and the systemic exclusion of people with disabilities from meaningful employment.
In Kampala alone, over 28,000 tons of plastic waste are discarded daily, with less than half being collected and only a fraction recycled. This leaves a significant environmental and health hazard. Simultaneously, many disabled individuals in Uganda face severe poverty and discrimination, often viewed as less capable and excluded from economic opportunities.
How Your Donation Will Be Used
Your generous donation will be directly invested in training programs for disabled women, providing them with the skills to turn plastic waste into beautiful, sustainable fashion. Here’s how your contribution will make a life-changing impact:
Training Costs: We will train 50 disabled women in tailoring and upcycling techniques over a period of six months. This includes professional tailoring courses, workshops on sustainable fashion design, and hands-on practice in our workshop.
Materials and Equipment: Funds will be used to purchase sewing machines, tailoring tools, and sustainable fabrics that blend with upcycled plastic materials. We will also ensure a steady supply of collected plastic waste for the training.
Stipends for Trainees: To support these women as they learn, we will provide stipends to cover their basic needs, allowing them to fully focus on their training without financial stress.
Mentorship and Support: Beyond technical skills, we offer mentorship programs to boost their confidence, self-esteem, and entrepreneurial spirit, preparing them for independent and empowered lives.
The Broader Impact
By supporting Kimuli Collections, you are not just donating to a project; you are investing in a sustainable future and championing the independence and dignity of disabled women. Every piece of clothing made by our trainees tells a story of resilience, creativity, and environmental stewardship.
Our eco-fashion products are more than just garments—they are symbols of hope and empowerment. With your help, we can transform lives, reduce plastic waste, and inspire a global movement towards sustainable living and inclusive communities.
Together, we can turn waste into opportunity and provide a brighter, more independent future for disabled women in Uganda.
