What is 78 Degrees North?
78 Degrees North is a short observational documentary, about the isolated community on Longyearbyen, Svalbard. Although this arctic island is desolate and isolated from the rest of civilisation, the community that live within it thrive in the extreme conditions that the arctic circle forces upon them, from the polar night to the midnight sun.
Our film will document the challenging lifestyle of Arve Alvestad, a skipper and tour guide living on Svalbard, and how day-to-day life poses considerably higher risks both physically and mentally in comparison to mainland Norway and the rest of the world.
Living in such a rural, arctic and desolate part of the world would be a nightmare for most. So why do the residents of Svalbard hold more community spirit than most of the world? This is what we intend to focus and observe when we are out there.
Our style of documentary is a ‘fly-on-the-wall’ or ‘observational’ approach. This has been a creative decision made by the director (Rosie) and DOP (Luke). The reason being is that they feel in order to bring Svalbard’s harsh but beautiful reality to the screen truthfully, they must shoot unobtrusively, with a raw, handheld cinematic approach.

Who are we?
We are film students from Solent University, we are currently in the pre-production stage of producing a documentary in the North Pole! Longyearbyen in Svalbard, Norway, is one of the worlds northernmost towns. With a residential population of 2,500 living in Svalbard, isolation is an understatement!

As film students, we are always looking for stories to tell, and as factual filmmakers, we want to share people’s stories from all over the world.

Where will your money go?
If you donate to our crowd funder, your money will be put into various costs of the production. From the 6 flights to and from Svalbard and allowing us to accommodate ourselves out there, all the way to allowing us to hire a multitude of camera lenses and protective equipment for the arctic. We will be hiring snowmobile and a pickup truck in Svalbard as our mode of transportation. Any money donated will be spread across these costs to help bring 78 Degrees North to life!
