Help WisconSWIM Mermaids Cross the English Channel

OUR STORY

As the daughter of a mother born and raised in England, I always thought it would be amazing to swim the English Channel. Fate led me to Pamela and Jennifer, and the next thing I knew, we were swimming from Bayfield to Madeline Island for the Point to LaPointe Race. Some people called us ladies, all from Barnes or Hayward in Northwest Wisconsin, crazy. Little did they know what was up next!

Not long after we began swimming together, it was a quick decision for us to become the first all-Wisconsin relay team to swim the English Channel. Not only that, but our team would be all female and bold enough to master the task of the treacherous swim from England to France. We are the WisconSWIM Mermaids, and you can help us cross the Channel!

OUR PRINCIPLES

YOUR SUPPORT

We have secured our official boat, aptly named Optimist, and pilot for our week-long time slot of August 18-26, 2024, in England. We will be on call waiting for the pilot’s thumbs up during that time and hit the sea when he determines weather and other conditions are conducive for the 26-mile (or longer!) adventure across the Channel. Airfare, accommodations, meals, travel, and gear expenses will add up quickly. Not to mention, we have much training, including an hours-long qualifying swim in 61-degree or cooler water – wearing only a costume (AKA swimming suit), goggles, and cap – no wetsuit.

We welcome financial contributions. All money raised will be used to offset our costs. Suppose we receive more than $30,000 in donations. In that case, our team will share the difference with local non-profit organizations or dedicate them to growing a Northwest Wisconsin community of open-water swimmers through group swims, youth lessons, gear donations, and events.
