Help Reduce HIV

Donation protected
Help reduce mother to infant transmission of HIV from 40% to 2%, through education.

* Each day, almost 700 children are infected with HIV
* 90% of these children live in sub-Saharan Africa
* Most acquire HIV from their mothers during pregnancy, childbirth, and breastfeeding
* Without treatment, approximately half of these children will die before age two

The solution we're raising funds for

* Effective and inexpensive medical interventions are available that can keep mothers and babies healthy
* Engaging women in care at all stages of pregnancy and motherhood is critical to protecting both her health and that of her baby

In Swaziland, a small landlocked country in Southern Africa, one in four adults is living with HIV or AIDS. Since the first cases of AIDS were reported in the country in 1986, the virus has spread at an alarming rate. Swaziland now has the highest HIV prevalence in the world, at 26 percent.

In July this year I am leaving London for Swaziland to raise funds and awareness of this issue and to highlight the work of charities like mothers2mothers.  Over £100,000 was raised during my last trip in 2014, where I documented the mothers2mothers inaugural “Cycle Challenge.”  This time I want to continue to document the story of the fight against Paediatric HIV/AIDS in the country.

The people affected
During my last trip to Swaziland, two children had just tested positive. One was with his mother, also HIV positive. The other – a tiny four year old girl - was with her aunt, her mother having already passed away from the virus. This is happening  every day, in villages and townships throughout sub-Saharan Africa.

This is a story I feel compelled to tell through photography.  The end result, I hope, will be a tribute to these communities and this struggle.  It is also a way to raise much needed funds to drive life saving efforts in the region.

Raising awareness
The documented work will take the form of a book and will be exhibited in London, Ireland, Swaziland and Geneva in 2016 to raise money for this cause. All profit from this work will be used to help in the fight against Paediatric AIDS in Sub Saharan Africa

I am leaving my job and partially funding the trip using my personal funds.  In order to make this project a reality, I need to bridge a shortfall of £10,500. If money can be saved anywhere along the way, it will be, and reinvested in this goal.

No child deserves to be born with HIV. Please help by donating what you can to help fund this project. Your money will go a long way towards raising money, raising awareness, and finding solutions.
