Anders' English Channel Journey
Donation protected
My name is Anders Jakobsson, and I like to say there is cold water running in my veins! I am a marathon swimmer, diver and triathlete with over 15 years’ experience in open water swimming. My dream is to swim the English Channel in 2018. An important step in ensuring I accomplish my goal is participation in the Varne Ridge Channel Swim Camp, which I hope to do this October.
I came to the U.S. in 1996 fom Vasteras, Sweden. My open water skills were built while serving as a rescue swimmer in the U.S. Navy for four years. Swimming in the Atlantic in waters exceeding 10,000 feet, I developed endurance and survival skills.
During and after my service in the U. S. Navy, I began long distance racing in marathons, triathlons (including four Escape from Alcatraz races), and expedition swims. In 2014 I swam solo across the Chesapeake Bay from the Eastern Shore to Chesapeake Beach for a distance of 16.8 miles.
In July 2016, I was one of only 60 people from around the world invited to participate in Cork (Ireland) Distance Week. The 9 day swim event was in water averaging 50 degrees Fahrenheit, with no wetsuits allowed, and water known for strong current and high chop.
My current weekly training involves 4-5 Chesapeake Bay swims in water averaging 40 degrees F, using no wetsuit and 2-3 long swims of 4-6 hours in a pool.
Varne Ridge's Swim Camp will allow me to test and perfect my endurance and skills for my Channel swim.
The funds raised in this campaign will cover the camp registration and airfare to England.
When I'm not swimming, You can often find me walking along the Bay with my dog Ran. Thank you for helping me make my dream a reality.
