Swim Together, Thrive Together

Since May 2022, more than 5000 Ukrainians have arrived in Australia to escape their war-torn country, with a high proportion taking refuge in the Eastern suburbs. Most of the people arriving are women with young children and the elderly as men aged between 18 and 60 are barred from leaving Ukraine. Many have never seen the ocean before and have limited swimming skills.
Over the last two years Bondi Icebergs Club have run several free learn to swim programs for the people of Ukraine. Generously supported by member donations, this initiative aimed to provide a safe and welcoming environment for participants to learn essential swimming skills. Over 50 kids were able to access swimming lessons at the Icebergs pool and have continued in 2024. Some of these kids had never even worn a wetsuit or even swam with goggles. Wetsuits and goggles were donated and numerous volunteers from the club took part.
