Mike Swor and his lovely wife Kim are fighting the hardest battle that any two people could possibly fight.
In November of 2020, Mike began experiencing discomfort eating and digestive distress. It got so bad, the only comfortable place to sleep was on the floor. Then in March of 2020, Mike was diagnosed with Stage III Adenocarcinoma of the Esophagus and Stomach – or what the rest of us non-medical professionals would call it, stomach cancer.
Mike is a retired veteran of the marine corps. Mike now works full-time as a systems administrations manager. When he’s not working, Mike is an avid outdoorsman. He loves to collect Star Wars memorabilia and play online games with his son Cody. Even though Mike is undergoing chemo, radiation, and immunotherapy treatments, he still works every day from home. He has lost 65 pounds and often gets weak from over-exertion. But he hasn’t given up. Whatever plan the doctors suggested he never wavered, often saying: “I don’t have a choice. I have to fight to stay with my family”.
Kim Swor, Mike’s wife, works full-time as a Trauma ICU nurse. She’s used to being there for patients and their families during the hardest times of their lives. When she’s not working, her priority is taking care of their son, 13-year-old Cody. When not taking care of patients or her son, Kim can be found cooking, reading, paddle boarding, adventuring with friends, and attending music festivals. Of course this past year most of her time is devoted to all of Mike’s needs as he battles cancer.
Sitting in a waiting room, waiting for the results from the latest round of treatments, Kim and Mike were exhausted. The past year weighed heavy, and whatever the doctor said would determine everything. Do we go on, and keep on fighting? Or have we lost the battle?
Knowing Kim was a medical professional, the doctor handed her the scans, and she saw, that their lives had taken a turn for the worse, again. The cancer had spread through Mike’s body, and he was not going to survive this. She was going to lose Mike. They were going to have to tell Cody that his Dad wasn’t Superman, and they were going to have to say goodbye and carry on without him.
The doctors can’t say for sure how long Mike has left. Mike remains resilient and shows the toughest grit one possibly can. He is about to undergo another round of chemo to slow the spread and buy them as much time as possible. The Doctors are doing everything in their power to make him as comfortable as they can, as long as they can.
This news will change Kim and Cody’s life forever. While the family does everything they can to support Mike, they can’t make it on their own. A mother and son are losing their supporting role, a charismatic husband and wonderful father. His parents are losing their son. And many of us are losing a loyal and trusted friend.
While Kim does work, she has cut her hours to take care of Mike and spend time with Cody. Mike was the primary source of income for their family. This means that the continuous medical bills and expenses will be left on Kim.
As of now, Mike continues to work and spend time with his family. He is spending every second that he can with his son. The Swor family are Christians and believe in the power of prayer. They have been praying for a miracle through this whole ordeal. They ask that you also keep them in your prayers. Prayers for comfort, prayers for understanding, prayers for their son who is losing his dad and best friend way too soon, and most of all please keep praying for a miracle!
From the bottoms of our hearts, we ask you to help in any way that you can. This family needs help with all the overwhelming expenses this hardship has brought upon them. There is no donation too small or big. For those who can’t donate, we ask that you provide the thing we need the most. I politely urge you to keep this family comforted and strong in your thoughts and prayers as they continue their fight.
I thank you kindly for anything and everything that you can do to support the Swor family. It truly means the world to them in their time of need.
