Vincent finished the 5th grade on June 28, 2024, and was enjoying his summer like any other 10-year-old boy. He was playing baseball with the U11 Amherstburg Cardinals. He was swimming with his sister and playing video games with friends. He was having his typical summer until we started noticing that Vincent wasn't himself.
As the symptoms continued to mount, we reached out to medical professionals. After a number of doctor visits and trips to the emergency room, they discovered a tumor in Vincent’s brain.
On July 19, Vincent was sent to Children’s Hospital (London Health Sciences Centre) for treatment. At first the tumor was believed to be benign; however, after his team of neurosurgeons removed a portion of the tumor from his brain, they confirmed that he had a rare form of cancer called a mixed germ cell tumor.
Vincent is undergoing chemotherapy, and other treatments to eliminate the cancer and treat the damage the tumor left behind. He will likely be traveling to the United States for radiation treatment because the technology he should receive is not available in Canada. This recommended treatment has less impact on other organs and tissues. Although his medical treatment is covered, there will be a financial impact while seeking care in the United States.
We are hopeful that his medical team will eliminate the cancer with these treatments and Vincent can return to being his amazing self. He will have a number of challenges and struggles along the way as he navigates his treatment and recovery.
Please keep him in your prayers.
