Help Nepal - Earthquake Relief
The Scenario:
As the 7.8 magnitude Earthquake struck in Nepal on Saturday, with more than 65 aftershocks then after, we are all praying for the safety of the people. This has taken over 6,250 lives, affected more than 8 millions so far, and hampered rescue efforts in rural areas. During this challenging period for Nepal, as members of London Universities Nepali Societies, not being at the location, the most we can do is raise fund for emergency disaster relief and quick recovery, send neccessary items to and where needed in Nepal, and pray for our people.
Current Needs:
As per the UN situation report No. 01 the current humanitarian needs are:
‘Government is requesting international assistance. Government is currently reporting that needs include: Search and Rescue capacity; - medical teams, supplies and tenting for hospitals; - heavy equipment for rubble removal; - and helicopters for transport and access to blocked areas’ and shelter.
About Us:
The Nepalese Societies of universities around London (SOAS, UCL, LSE, Queen Mary, Imperial) have come together to fundraise and help the communities to restore their livelihoods in Nepal. Students from LondonMet, University of Westminster, Bournemouth, and Greenwich have come forward; we welcome all to spread the word and help Nepal.
Action Plan:
To ensure the full utilisation of this fund, we have been doing a lot of research. Presently, we are looking for bulk suppliers of tents in neighbouring countries (China and India). So please keep donating so that we can purchase essential items in bulk quantities.
We are in discussion with Oxfam, International Medical Corp, Britain Nepal Medical Trust, Nepalese Nursing Association UK, United Nations, Red Cross Nepal, Doctors without Borders and various organizations, regarding the utilisation of funds.
On the ground we are coordinating with Rotaract Club of Yala, youth activits, and volunteer groups who have been reaching out to affected areas and villages to distribute neccessary items, water and food.
The items that we have sent so far have reached Nepal and have been distributed to the Nepal Armed Police Hospital and to affected areas through volunteer groups. We need more funds to be able to buy tents, solar lights, water purifying tablets, edibles for more than 8 millions of our people back home.
We are liasing with the people in the ground in Nepal to access what the needs are at the moment and through the funds we will be sending all that we can immediately.
We will be regularly updating about our activites, progress and utilization of funds on this page so please click on 'subscribe to updates'.
