Meet 5-year-old Logan Syer.

(Logan under the table trying to calm himself)
Logan has been on the wait list for ABA therapy and IBI therapy in Durham Region (Ontario) since he was 3. This therapy is most effective when delivered at the youngest age possible. It is very expensive and time-intensive but would give Logan the best chance at an independent life one day. Today, Logan sits at #92 on the IBI list (estimated 2 - 2 1/2 years left), and about 20 months away from ABA therapy.
Logan also needs physical therapy for a hereditary peripheral neuropathy he has called Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) disease . This kind of therapy is a challenge for Logan because it involves communication and physical touch, both of which cause a great deal of distress for Logan. He has received one block of 8-week sessions (eight one-hour sessions) every six months. This is far from what he needs. His body is weak and rigid. He outgrew his foot braces and is unable to receive a new set. He can't run and play like other kids can. He spends most of his recesses at school sitting on the ground.
Logan also has special dietary needs and speech language needs. The wait list for the speech language program at Waverly Public School is 3 years. This school has not provided special care for Logan in his kindergarden class. Educational Assistants in the school are called to the classroom only when a child becomes disruptive. Logan is very passive, so help is not coming his way. Despite his severe anxiety levels, communication problems, physical challenges and developmental delays, he only gets special help at school when he soils himself. Logan's parents have pressed for help since Logan began school last year, but meeting after meeting leave them no further ahead.
Very recently (in the past month), this family faced a terrifying ordeal with their 2-year-old son Dylan who suddenly developed Type 1 Diabetes. His condition was severe and life-threatening. Now, the Syer family must find a way to give Dylan 24-hour monitoring and care including four needles each day.
We cannot take away autism or type 1 diabetes, but we can relieve some of the financial burden. Erin and John Syer are loving and dedicated parents who work very hard and would do anything for their children.
Erin Syer has written a letter which is posted on their website . It is heartbreaking to hear her experience.
This family has been dealt more challenges than one family can handle. Please give generously.
All funds raised will go directly to Logan's needs.
A note from Erin Syer:
Right now, we have only an IT (Instructional Therapist) working with Logan because that is all we can afford. This costs $25/h, and we are affording only 4 hours per week. This is way below what Logan needs. His speech is very delayed, he has outgrown the region's preschool speech program, and the wait list through the school board is 3 years. Speech therapy will cost us a minimum of $50/hour. It is heart wrenching for us as his parents to need someone else to teach him how to converse with people, but professionals just have a way of breaking through to children like Logan that us parents do not. His muscle tone is severely underdeveloped. He cannot ride a bike like a typical 5 year old, his core muscles simply do not have the strength to keep him upright for a long time. He requires physiotherapy which typically costs $75/h. Then there is the IBI (Intensive Behavioural Intervention) therapy that we need to address his sensitivity to sounds, sight, food textures, anxiety..... he has a lot of anxiety since his little brother developed Type 1 diabetes. He is exhibiting a lot of stimming (hitting himself) and often chooses to be alone. To achieve IBI, we require 2 x IT's at about $25/h, 1 senior IT at about $35/h, and a child psychologist at $90/h. We want Logan to achieve the best speech, physiotherapy, and psychotherapy we can.
