Help The Syncopated Times Go Non Profit

Donation protected
The Syncopated Times is the only national publication devoted to traditional jazz, ragtime, and swing—America’s musical gift to the world. The pandemic led to the closure of many of the jazz festivals the monthly magazine counted on as advertisers, ultimately making a for-profit model no longer feasible. Andy Senior, who took over The American Rag and relaunched it as The Syncopated Times in 2016, has been covering losses since March 2020 out of his limited retirement savings.

We need to raise $60,000, or more, so we can launch a new 501c3 nonprofit organization called Syncopated Media on a strong footing and expand beyond the monthly paper to cover the jazz scene and jazz history in the visual and audio formats that engage a modern audience. While The Syncopated Times in print (and online at syncopatedtimes.com) will remain our core focus, the new organization will be able to secure grant funding to produce documentaries for YouTube, compile albums for Bandcamp, create podcasts, and resurrect Syncopated Times Radio.

Considering the quality of The Syncopated Times now, imagine how much more the new organization will accomplish with even a little funding beyond what comes in from subscriptions. Money raised in this drive will cover necessary expenses during the process of becoming a 501c3 corporation, and allow the new organization to start with a large enough budget to sustain operations until further funding can be secured.

Our nonprofit status will come with many benefits for our readers and the jazz community at large. We intend to recruit a large and experienced board to pilot the new nonprofit and greatly extend our reach, especially into school and community music programs. The Board will also ensure that the future of professional coverage of the traditional jazz, ragtime, and swing community is not dependent on a single owner-operator, but a reflection of the community itself.

The Syncopated Times will retain a subscription model and is depending on you to renew yours. Andy will still be putting together each issue. Nothing will change for current subscribers!

Please give as generously as you can. Any size gift will help us reach our goal. Thank you!
