Vascular dementia

My gran was diagnosed with Vascular dementia in her late 70s, when I was in my late teens, initially only her balancewas affected, she wasn’t able to walk in a straight line and had to be with someone when outside. As the years have progressed , (she is now 90 )she has many of the symptoms below.

Slower thinking – taking more time to process information and to form thoughts and sentences.

Personality changes – people may become low in mood, more emotional or lose         interest in what’s happening around them.

Movement problems – difficulty walking or changes in the way a person walks.

   Stability – unsteadiness and falls.

The symptoms of vascular dementia get worse over time. This can take several years, but the speed of change can vary over time and from person to person

In the later stages, the condition affects more aspects of everyday life. People may need help with activities such as eating, dressing and using the toilet.

My gran is now in a nursing home as she is unable to walk, there are good days and not so good days.

There is no treatment for Vascular dementia, people need to be aware of dementia and access websites like the British Heart foundation which are very informative. .Below is a link

These might help some people identify the early signs & make it easier to deal with . Atfirst I didn’t understand why my gran was getting more argumentative & just not her self ! Nothing can fully prepare you as it can be very intense. But I hope some of this information can be useful or people can relate

one of the biggest best helps I have Had dealing with this is with my own dog & a friends dog. This is a great distraction for the mind &keeps my gran focus on them rather than problems or stress created by the dementia!

Unfortunately I can’t give 20% of the funds of this to underheughark as is originally hoped. it will go straight to the British Heart Foundation account . But all help towards the animal shelter would be appreciated. All things welcome toys food & walking volunteers! This can be a good way of getting out & about experience new thing at the same time helping a range of animals . I plan to do more in the future & will make sure some proceeds go here .

I will be walking from Glasgow to Edinburgh in one day on the 10th of July . it’s not the biggest of tasks bit this is all about tasing awareness & helping people in future of will have to deal/care with loved ones affected .As my gran being one of my best mates I have struggled to deal with the things from time to time ! So the more you can understand about it earlier the better !
