Niagara Falls Badminton and Tennis Club

The Niagara Falls Badminton and Tennis Club is a non-for-profit organization which provides programs that encourage an active lifestyle through sport. Over the years we have lost large funding sources and solely rely on our sports programs to keep the club open.
The COVID-19 pandemic and its closures have been financially detrimental on us due to being unable to run our programs or running them at a minimal capacity.
We had been closed since Monday, March 16th, 2020 and we were finally able to open up our doors Monday, August 3rd, 2020; meaning we were closed for 4.5 months. We have now closed again starting Monday, December 21st, 2020 with no reopening date in sight.
Due to these first set of closures we were unable to finish our Fall/Winter Volleyball Leagues, our Child and Youth Badminton Lessons, and our regular season for Badminton and Table Tennis. We were also unable to start our Summer Beach Volleyball Leagues on time and ultimately had to cancel the season for multiple reasons.
As we headed into the Fall/Winter season, we were optimistic that our numbers would be better as the Covid-19 cases numbers were fairly low at that time. However, due to personal reasons (health and financial) of the participants in our programs, our numbers for this Fall/Winter season have been gutted.
All of this has resulted in a very large loss of income for the year and a large sum of debt incurred to keep the club alive - that we have no sight of getting out of quickly.
What does this mean in numbers?
*Based on our 2019 numbers.
A minimum loss of 39 beach volleyball teams = -$28,275
This resulted in us cancelling our Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday Beach Volleyball Leagues.
Loss of half of the rent for the lawn bowling green = -$5554
The lawn bowling club had a decimated season with the cancellation of all of their leagues and tournaments and it was not financially feasible for them to pay the total amount.
A minimum loss of 40 child and youth badminton lesson participants = -$8,814
This has resulted in cancelling our Child and Youth Badminton Lessons on Saturday mornings all together. We were hopeful that we could have a late start in January, but that is now out of the question.
A minimum loss of 34 court volleyball teams = -$34,850
This has resulted in cancelling our Sunday and Friday Indoor Volleyball Leagues. Our Monday and Wednesday leagues are running well below capacity. Again, we were hopeful that we could have a handful more of teams join in January, but the numbers of Covid-19 have proved that now impossible.
We also only collected half of our league fee for our court volleyball teams in September/October 2020 to help alleviate teams of paying upfront in full and also, in the case we were to close and owed teams large sums of money. However, due to being dependent on this other half of the money coming in in January. We will be out of at least a month of league fees and longer.
Lastly, there has been large loss on the bar and kitchen. Between being closed entirely, the kitchen being closed since March (and no open date in sight), less people at the club, less people staying after their sport program, and lastly, with the new restrictions in place, players not being able to sit together and us having minimal space to accommodate everyone, the sales have been lacklustre and at times not even worth it to have the bar open.
Note this only highlights the losses from some of are larger programs and does not account for loss in badminton memberships, table tennis memberships, tournaments, club office rental, club rental for events, etc.
With these fundraising efforts we hope to pay the bills to stay afloat. At this point, it would be a bonus to even pay off any of the large debt we have incurred. We have been around for 91 years (92 in March) and we are not ready to shut our doors. Many memories have been shared and made at club, many athletes from all over have walked through our doors, and we would like to continue serving our community of Niagara Falls.
Please share with your family, friends, and those that you know who have spent time at the club over the many years. We appreciate help of any kind during these difficult times.
