Make MORE Merry Moments for Macey
and The Bret & Rachel George Family!
Macey is an adorable brown-eyed 15 year old girl! Anyone who has the joy of associating with Macey feels loved, uplifted, and she makes you want to be more dedicated to doing more and being better than before. Macey has both a contagious giggle & sparkle! She is a peacemaker, hard worker, dedicated student, loving family member & friend to all. She is a faithful member of the LDS Church, and purely delights in doing good and being good. She is an example of all that is good.
After months and months of tests: Macey was diagnosed 9 months ago with a rare brain tumor known as Craniopharyngioma. This tumor grows at the base of the brain in an area where the pituitary gland, optic nerves, and hypothalamus are located. In February of this year, she underwent surgery in Salt Lake City, UT, to remove the tumor.
Although the tumor is benign, it does have malignant tendencies by attaching itself to everything around it.
Although, Macey received wonderful care at the hands of very skilled physicians; over time, the tumor had already done too much damage and the result left Macey with a condition known as: Hypopituitarism. This means that her pituitary gland no longer functions; which is the mastery gland of the body. Mainly, it sends the hormones which cause the thyroid and adrenal glands to work and also for telling the ovaries to produce estrogen and progesterone. In addition, she now has diabetes insipidus which causes her body inability to retain any water.
For Macey, this means that she will have to be on several medications for the REST of her life to replace the hormones that the pituitary gland made before. Without these daily and extremely vital medications, Macey would not be able to live.
One very difficult side effect from the removal of the tumor is that the Hypothalamus was also affected. The Hypothalamus regulates mood, body temperature, hunger, and how the body stores energy. For many survivors; including Macey, it becomes extremely difficult to manage weight gain because of the nearly constant hunger and the hypothalamus telling the body to store energy instead of using it. This type of tumor has a high rate of re-growth and regular MRI’s will be a lifelong procedure for Macey.
In September of this year, Macey had her first follow-up MRI where it was discovered that her tumor is growing back. In Macey’s case: the step to remove the tumor will mean a six-week course of radiation in Salt Lake City, UT. This is necessary for Macey to be in Utah for the specialized kind of radiation therapy to reduce further damage to the brain. This type of radiation is NOT offered any closer to home in Wyoming.
Currently, her teams of doctors have decided to monitor the tumor’s growth closely with regular MRI’s for three to four months before more interventions resume. What a blessing for Macey and their family! Macey can now enjoy the holidays with her family; which is a great relief and certainly cause for a HUGE smile on everyone’s faces!
The Bret & Rachel George Family is one of the greatest families I have been associated with. The children are loved and cared for deeply; with each believing and feeling that they are the “favorite”. They are happy, humble, content, and find great joy in the simple things. Their home is full of faith, courage, unselfishness, music, creativity, frugality, sacrifice, lots of laughter and tons of love.
When their oldest son Ammon was born; he was born with Cerebral Palsy. He suffers from seizures, is non-verbal and needs to be in a wheelchair. He is not able to care for himself and needs someone with him at all times. Oh, how they ALL love Ammon in their family! He is a treasure to them.
Bret and Rachel have a deep knowledge & faith in God, The Plan of Happiness & Eternal Families. They serve in their LDS church faithfully; no matter what current challenge arises. Together, they unselfishly and happily work and serve quietly without complaint or need for praise, as they care and provide for their seven children: physically, emotionally and spiritually.
This great George Family has been already pressed down with the many financial obligations connected with there amazing son, Ammon, with Cerebral Palsey and the 24/7 care needed long-term for him and their six other children.
Brett and Rachel's hearts are BIG but are having to be torn as they are needing to be and wanting to be in two places at one time. This will be the case multiple times for extended amounts of time be it days, weeks, or months over this year and in the future. This will be EXTREMELY COSTLY and very tricky to arrange for and implement for the needs of each member of their large family.
All donations, undoubtedly will be humbly and graciously received and spent in the most effective and frugal manner. It will provide immediate repreive from current costly and mounting medical bills and continued and unforseen costs in the future. This money will also be used for travel expenses repeatedly back and forth, food, lodging for extended stays, specialized medical care and treatment, expensive life saving daily medications, trained home care/medical attention for Ammon in their absence and the individulaized needs and well-being of their other children.
It is my deepest hope that this story will touch the giving hearts of all who read it and generously share in the act of “Making MORE Merry Moments for Macey” and the Bret & Rachel George Family. May you be blessed for your kindness on their behalf and a peace that carries you through this wonderful holiday season!
