My Volunteer Trip to Fiji
Donation protected
My name is Mary Doody and at present I am living at home, working. I started studying health and Performance Science in UCD last September only to realise that the course wasn't for me so I made the decision to come out of the course last November. Over the past few months I have been contemplating what to do next year, and I can think of nothing better than to spend time volunteering in a devleoping country. I really want to help those who are less fortunate and get an insight into a world so different to ours. I am motivated to try and make even a small difference in the lives of the people we will be helping. I will be setting off next September, and volunteering with the award-winning organisation GVI (Global Vision International)- (http://www.gvi.ie).
With this project I will be travelling to Fiji, specifically to the Dawasamu District on the east coast of Viti Levu Island. Many people are surprised first off to hear that I will be travelling to Fiji, as it is famously known as a toursit destination for it's white, sandy beaches and transparent waters. However, the underdeveloped aspect of this beautiful country is kept well under the radar. More than 250,000 people are living in poverty in Fiji, and many more are living on or just above the poverty line.
During this time, I will be assisting in key infrastructure construction projects, such as implementing water and harvesting systems for the local people. We will also be working with rural communities in setting up income generating projects, so that they can live comfortably and sufficiently for generations to come. A big part of this project will include volunteerng in the local school, teaching children how to read and write, but also the basic skills they will need in life.
If you support this project, you will be helping out an entire community. Children, farmers, parents, village people and even the endangered ecosystem will benefit from your contribution. It is a diverse project which aims to assist so many people, in so many different ways.
I aim to raise in or around 4,500 euro, which by no means will be an easy task. That's why I will be organising a range of events, including bake sales, barbeques, fun runs and me shaving my head- dates yet to be decided. Any contribution at all is warmly welcomed and greatly appreciated, a little can go a long way in a project like this!! You will be making a huge difference in the lives of these people. Thank you x
