N96th Street Community Garden Lights The Way
Donation protected
Hi neighbors,
Since early 2022, the North Greenwood/Licton Springs neighborhood became "ground zero" for a large homeless encampment that quickly grew and spiraled out of control. Open drug use and dealing, violence and criminal activity created a dangerous environment and threatened the safety of nearby residents, businesses, and the community. After a shooting left a person dead, the city cleared the encampment, and people relocated in July.
To secure safety for residents in the area, a group of concerned neighbors quickly rallied and created a community garden with raised beds, flowers, and shrubs in the space once occupied by the encampment. The goal is to plant native, self-sustaining trees and plants that require minimal maintenance in the long run. This GoFundMe is to raise funds for the plants, materials, and water to develop and establish the garden.
While the garden acts as a deterrent to future encampments, more importantly, it serves as a community space where neighbors gather as strangers, leave as friends, and unite to create positive, transformative change in our community in North Greenwood/Licton Springs.
We appreciate your donations or volunteering efforts at the garden. We'll also be posting photos of the growing garden here.
Please help us create light, joy and togetherness in a place once shrouded in darkness.
