Tabasamu Orphanage needs your help (COVID-19)

Hello everyone,
I am David Wella from Usa River, near Arusha, in Northern Tanzania. I am the founder of Tabasamu Childcare and Orphanage Centre.
“Tabasamu” in Swahili means “smile”. I have chosen this name because my main goal has always been to support underprivileged children in all possible ways, providing them with a place to live where they would feel loved and cared for and, ultimately, giving them a chance to build a better future.
Particularly, the reason why, five years ago, I decided to establish this foundation was to create a secure, healthy and stimulating environment for orphans. In my community, there are a lot of children who lost their parents because of HIV/AIDS, malaria, cholera, accidents or family conflicts. But, after a two-year experience, I understood that children from low-income families needed help as well since, for instance, their families could not afford to pay for their education.
So, now, our mission is to provide all disadvantaged children in the community with an all-encompassing support, including:
- A safe shelter where children are taken care of and are encouraged to express themselves: our home;
- Food security through a balanced diet;
- Access to good quality education;
- Basic health care .
Unfortunately, the Covid-19 pandemic has jeopardized the project I was carrying on with the help of so many volunteers from all over the world and Tabasamu’s very existence is currently at risk.
This is how the sanitary crisis, with its subsequent economic repercussions, has affected us:
- most international volunteer programmes have stopped, which means Tabasamu has been deprived of one of its main channels of on-site and financial support;
- the price of some essential primary goods has increased;
- new unexpected expenses have become necessary, such as the purchase of masks and more sanitizing products;
- my salary, which I have always used, at least partially, to run Tabasamu, is no longer sufficient to cover all of the ordinary expenses and simultaneously protect the kids from Coronavirus in the best possible way;
- as a result, unable to pay the rent, we have been evicted from the house we had been renting for a long time. I chose to bring the children to my family’s home but, of course, it is a very precarious situation, since the house is not suited to accommodate all of the children;
- the children’s school career is at risk, too, since we lack the money necessary for the school fees of 10 of them.
This is why we need the support of as many people as possible. Each and every donation can actually make the difference! For instance…
- 5 $ will help Tabasamu provide rice for one child for the entire month;
-10 $ are enough to buy masks and soap for one child for three months;
- 15 $ is the amount needed to pay for the monthly salary of two professional childminders for each child;
- 20 $ is just the perfect amount to cover the cost of the school transport for one child for the entire month;
- a 40 $ donation will allow you to pay for the monthly school fee of a child, ensuring that he or she have access to high-level education.
Higher donations could make us think of even more ambitious goals:
- with 150 $ you can provide one child with everything he or she need for an entire month: this sum comprises the school fee, school supplies and school transport, food, clothing, medications, the caregivers’ salary and all household expenses;
- you can also contribute to the payment of the rent for the house hosting the children (200 $ per month), so they will never have to worry about being evicted again!
Therefore, your generosity will make it possible for Tabasamu’s children to:
- have their home back;
- feel safe again;
- stay healthy during the pandemic;
- pursue their studies.
Be part of the happiness of our children, help us continue to make them smile.
