Tagalog Classes for Organizers - AB Chicago

The decades-long crisis of poverty in the Philippines has endured through the most recent years of the Philippine government's mismanagement of the COVID-19 pandemic. While the crisis today has taken the form of stagnant wages amid ever-increasing prices of basic daily needs, government corruption, state neglect of the thousands of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) who are forced to leave their families for work opportunities in other countries, and militarization have worsened the effects of this crisis on the masses of Filipino workers and peasants. Given the recent human rights violations, incidents of harassment, intimidation, and extrajudicial killings of the country's activists, land defenders, peasants leaders and other critical voices of the administration of Ferdinand Bongbong Marcos, Jr., our need for solid and lasting organizing is stronger and more urgent than ever before. We believe that Tagalog (Filipino) language classes will strengthen our ability to integrate better with intergenerational members of our community to organize around helping to solve these issues affecting so many of us.

Anakbayan (AB) Chicago is a chapter of Anakbayan USA, a mass organization of militant youth, students, and workers fighting for national democracy in the Philippines with a socialist perspective. In our analysis of our organizing work around solving problems of the people in our community, we concluded that the problems affecting our families, friends, and counterparts in the Philippines have a direct effect on our lives here.
