Trees4Haiti was formed in 2022 to answer the call and address the main issues surrounding today’s climate initiatives, as well as help rebuild the most poverty-stricken country in the western hemisphere, Haiti. Our members include former members of other organizations, who have either disbanded or become unable to sustain productivity due to natural events such as the 2010 earthquake, several hurricanes, and the covid pandemic.
Our group members have been working and living in Haiti since 1959. The main group our members were associated with was Fondation Seguin, located in Parc La Visite, Haiti, featured in the 2005 PBS documentary Unfinished Country by Bill Moyers Wide Angle. This is where our Vice-President Winthrop Attie has planted over 2 million trees and been the recipient of funds from many organizations such as, but not limited to, USAID, the German Embassy, Taiwanese Cooperation, as well as major corporate donors. This was all before the earthquake in 2010. We have a main basecamp on top of the mountain with 150 acres of forest, nurseries, a small warehouse, as well as living quarters for visitors, workers, and VIPS, listed in the Lonely Planet travel guide as an ecotourist destination, “The Auberge Inn”. This has been powered by wind and batteries for the past 20 years, however after nearly a decade of a lack of sustainable funding to rebuild infrastructure within the base camp, our funds have gone directly to the planting of trees and maintaining nursery employees.
We are about to embark on a reset, to reforest the watershed of Port Au Prince, starting with pine trees and shrubs native to the Parc La Visite area, which are the home to many endangered bird species, such as the Bicknell’s Thrush. Our immediate needs to be ready for the reset include building repairs, replacing the wind turbine and batteries, as well as implementing solar energy. Our tools needed to sustain the compound to be able to support our reset are a DJI mini 3 drone, our 2010 Yamaha Rhino 700 FI 4x4, and travel expenses.
