Taking Care of Tanisha
Donation protected
Greetings Everyone,
I hope everyone is doing well. My name is Laura Luick, and I was part of the OU Ortho class of 2019.
Unfortunately, I am writing because 2020 has 2020’d one of our own – Tanisha Leatherman. Tanisha has helped in PPOB clinic for 18 years and has specifically been rocking the front desk in our orthopedic resident clinic for 15 years. She has recently been diagnosed with Stage IV Ovarian Cancer with metastases to her abdomen. She has had surgery already to remove a 6cm tumor and place radiation beads. She is receiving chemotherapy 3x per week until March when her status will be re-evaluated. Tanisha is still working (although she has a lot of pain and nausea from the chemo) so that she can support her family.
A couple of us have decided to organize a bit of a benefit for her. We’d like to help support her with medical expenses and to help her cover costs for her 10-year-old son should she need to take some well-deserved time to rest and recuperate. Unfortunately, if she does need to take any unpaid leave, she will be 100% responsible for paying for her insurance premium (including the 75 – 80% that OU normally covers) in order to keep her coverage, per OU’s policy.
During residency I remember more than one pep talk that I got from her – one as a trauma intern who was completely lost, one as a second year when I had to be in charge of a clinic for the first time, and multiple during trauma chiefdom. She has always managed the front desk with a smile and a willingness to help out – even when you forgot to tell her you won’t be in clinic that week until the day before. She has a way of providing a shoulder to cry on but also giving a kick in the butt to encourage you to keep going. Please consider helping us show her the support that she has always given us! We are trying to get her the funds by December 15th, 2020.
