Taking on a 21 day Trek in Nepal for the Didi Foundation!
Taking on Everest Base Camp, Chola and Renjo La Passes for the Didi Foundation
On the 5th of May 2025, Jos and I are starting a 21 day, 150km trek to Everest Base Camp, climbing a total of 5,545 metres in elevation and crossing both the Chola and Renjo La Passes. We are incredibly excited to take on this adventure, and we have chosen to use it as an opportunity to support the Didi Foundation, a Nepalese based organisation dedicated to empowering women through literacy programs and other life-changing initiatives. Before we begin our trek, we’ll be visiting the Didi Foundation in Kageshwori Manohara to witness firsthand the incredible work which they are doing. We would love for you to follow our journey and help us raise funds to support these inspiring women.
About The Didi Foundation
Established as a charity in 2012, the Didi Foundation was founded by Australian Jan Pryor, who was enthralled by Nepal, its culture and people on her first visit in 2009. The Didi Foundation aims to support and educate women, children and communities who are facing hardships. Their goal is to assist in the creation of sustainable futures, and we are so excited to be able to play a small role in their continuation of that.
Why We Are Raising Funds
Jos and I’s trek will be raising money to support the Didi Foundations Senior Literacy Program, which is one of their first and most impactful initiatives which they run. Many of the women who we will meet at the Didi Foundation have gone through life unable to read or write. Of the 53 students currently in the literacy program (aged between 40-72), only 4 ever attended school beyond 10 years old. While their brothers were sent to school, these women worked on family farms and were married by the age of 14-16 years old. Giving them the gift of literacy will have such profound impact on their independence and ability to function in an economic society.
How Your Donations Will Make an Impact
With your support we are going to be able to supply these women with Government-issued textbooks, qualified tutors, essential classroom materials, and direct support to individual women in the program.
Your donations will change lives in tangible, everyday ways. With literacy and basic maths skills, these women will be able to:
- Read bus signs and medicine labels
- Understand their medical reports
- Help their grandchildren with homework
- Send messages using a mobile phone
- Pay for items and understand if they received correct change
- And for some, even start their own businesses
This program allows these Nepalese women to be in charge of their futures and gives them agency to thrive as people independent of anyone else. Together, let’s help these women reclaim the power of education, rewrite their futures and remind them that it’s never too late to learn, grown and thrive.
