STORY

Will Vogler and his father Bill have a grand vision: to create a campus for unique eco-buildings in Tamaqua, Pennsylvania.

Will’s first endeavor into natural building came with a small, Earthship-inspired greenhouse he constructed in his backyard.

This greenhouse, inspired by architect Mike Reynolds’ "Earthship" philosophy, is off-grid and built with reclaimed waste materials such as tires and glass bottles. It harvests rainwater, captures solar energy, and uses the Earth to passively regulate its interior temperature.

Will saw that these building techniques could provide a low-cost, low-carbon housing option not only for his father, Bill, but for a larger community of like-minded individuals. And so, with the purchase of 18 mountainous acres in Northern Pennsylvania, the Tamaqua Sustainability Project was born.

TAMAQUA SUSTAINABILITY PROJECT

The mission of the Tamaqua Sustainability Project (TSP) is to spread ecological consciousness by providing education and inspiration for living in self-sufficient, resilient, and creative ways.

BILL'S BURROW

The first structure at TSP is Bill’s Burrow, a 2,500 square foot, solar-passive, off-grid house for Bill and his dog.

Since breaking ground in 2019, the project has fostered a community of passionate and dedicated volunteers who have been helping Will and Bill build the structure. In partnership with nearby Stonehedge Gardens, TSP has hosted a month-long research-driven apprenticeship and an educational hands-on building workshop. More of both are planned in the upcoming months.

Bill’s Burrow is now about 80% complete. The Tamaqua Sustainability Project, however, is just being born – and we have a long way to go.

Completing Bill’s Burrow will serve as a foundation for other experimental low-carbon buildings, apprenticeships, workshops, and classes. Yet with setbacks from Covid, the building department and the cost of materials Will and Bill’s ability to pay out of pocket for materials and other necessary expenses is dried up.  Your support – however small or large – will ensure we have the resources needed to complete the construction of this off-grid house and allow TSP to grow.

EXPENSES

In order to help finish construction of Bill’s Burrow, we have a fundraising goal of $15,000, for the following items:

*  Septic system sand mound ($5,000?) (the septic system tanks are already in)
*  Floors  ($6,000)
*  Insulation ($5,000)
*  Solar panels ($2,000)
*  Site survey so we can sell land for other homes of this type ($7,000)
