Supporting Tamara Allanah in her Nursing Program

Aniin, hello, boozhoo,

Thank you for taking the time to read this, and welcome to the campaign to raise $7,000.00 for Tamara’s Allanah’s post secondary education in the Nursing program at Assiniboine Community College.

Based in the beautiful country of Sagkeeng First Nation, Tamara Allanah is in her final year of the three-year Nursing Program at Assiniboine Community College on the Selkirk Manitoba campus.

Tamara has been on a long journey to be at this stage of achieving her post secondary professional qualifications as a Licensed Practical Nurse.

The program that Tamara is enrolled in rotates it location throughout rural and remote Manitoba, returning to each town only after several years. There are any number of circumstances that could put these last ten months of Tamara’s professional training into jeopardy: technology expenses to respond to COVID changes in program delivery, vehicle maintenance and winterizing, expenses of food, housing, utilities and program supplies. This campaign will help right away to stabilize a monthly budget of fixed costs and meet throughout the year some of the emergency needs that arise in rural and remote settings.

Tamara has worked hard to make her dream to be a health care professional come true and it has taken her on a challenging but unwavering path. Back when her dream was beginning, she saved money for her program while working and studying prerequisites in Calgary. She moved back to Sagkeeng First Nation on the banks of the Winnipeg River, finding work in community health care and continuing her education in preparation for the program. She applied and was accepted into to the Nursing Program at Assiniboine Community College. Tamara has earned scholarships along the way, allowing her to complete two of the three years of the Nursing program. Tamara is in her third year of classes and practicum sessions in Selkirk, 100 kilometres south of Sagkeeng First Nation, working towards graduation in March 2021. She has pursued courses that can bridge her qualifications into RN studies and will be applying to begin work as a fully qualified LPN in northern Indigenous communities.

Tamara has always fought and worked for her dreams. Through her tenacity, she has built her academics, experience and skills to be where she is now, ten months from graduation. Along with her studies, Tamara has contributed to her community through art and culture, pre-veterinarian animal care, elders’ health care and through her own unique style of leadership. Tamara has turned challenges into opportunities, steadily achieving her objectives towards her goal.

While this campaign is about joining Tamara on part of her journey, it is also about contributing to women’s education, Indigenous empowerment, STEM careers, and remote medicine. There is no doubt it contributes to safety and strength and intergenerational confidence and health.

Today, this first day of this campaign, is National Indigenous Day and the beginning of summer – the day of the longest sunshine. Please join in affirming Tamara’s dream and to be a part of the positive community ripples that come from it.

Chi meegwetch, thank you so much, merci beaucoup,
With much appreciation and gratitude,
Doug Saul
