Support Tamii and Cherokee’s Journey to Healing and Hope
In July of 2022, Tamii and Cherokee set off on what was supposed to be a joyful trip to visit family and friends after leaving their home in Dutch Harbor, Alaska. Full of excitement and anticipation, they were eager to reconnect with loved ones and return to a place that felt like “home.” Sadly, their journey took a devastating turn when Tamii suffered a stroke during their travels between Anchorage and Seattle.
Just a week later, while still recovering in the hospital, Tamii suffered a second stroke—this one even more severe. It left her with extensive damage, confining her to a wheelchair and making it impossible for her to care for herself.
Despite these overwhelming challenges, Tamii displayed incredible determination. She spent a month in a physical rehabilitation hospital, working tirelessly on her recovery. While there was some progress, the road to full recovery is still long, and the path ahead is uncertain.
Tamii has been unable to return to work, and their once-stable savings and nest egg have been completely depleted by the mounting costs of travel between Anchorage and Washington for life-saving medical care, as well as the overwhelming medical bills that have followed.
Cherokee, an unwavering source of support, has been working full-time while caring for Tamii and managing their home on his own. With no family nearby and limited community programs or services available through Cherokee’s job-based medical insurance, they’ve had to navigate this journey alone, doing the best they can.
But it’s become clear: they need more support than the isolated island of Dutch Harbor can offer. Tamii’s condition has worsened, and while Cherokee continues to do his best, the weight of it all has become too much to bear alone. Tamii desperately wants to improve, not just for herself, but for her husband as well.
