Tan-y-Garth Hall Retreat Covid 19 Emergency Appeal
The UK’s first permanent yoga centre based at Tan-y-Garth Hall in North Wales is under imminent threat of closure due to the enforced Covid 19 shutdown. We are urgently raising money in aid of TAN-Y-GARTH HALL RETREAT to help it survive this challenging situation. Every donation and share will help. Please contribute if you can and share with others. Thank you in advance for your contribution to this cause. It means a lot to us.
Why We Need Your Help
We have been forced to shutdown for the foreseeable future by the Welsh Government due to the Covid 19 pandemic. This has cut off all of our main sources of income for the foreseeable future. Because we are a charity run entirely by volunteers we do not qualify for financial help from any of the various government Covid 19 schemes and can not get a loan from our bank for the same reason. After extensive efforts the Trustees have now all but exhausted these possibilities and existing resources.
The enforced shut down means we will run out of funds by the end of July this year which is not enough time to raise a mortgage or sell the building. This would be a disaster unless we can raise enough money to keep going in the meantime. Otherwise we could well be forced to wind up the charity and give the building to the Charity Commission.
The centre has always operated on a not for profit basis providing affordable, high quality courses in Yoga, Meditation, Tai Chi, healing, wellbeing, philosophy and spiritual development. When Covid 19 hit, we were in the process of developing the centre, opening up to a wider range of users with ambitious plans to improve the facilities and restore the building. We expected to fund this over the next two years through a combination of grants, fund raising and loans.
How the Funding Will be Used
The money raised from this appeal will be used to replace the income lost due to the Covid 19 shutdown. This will pay the overheads of the building based on a survival budget from the end of July through to next Spring. By this time the hope is that it will be possible to begin to return to something like the normal programme of events. These costs include insurances, Council Tax, heating, electricity, maintenance, administration and volunteers expenses. Any money raised over and above what is needed for this purpose will be put towards the cost of repairs to the roof.
Gift Aid
As we operate a Gift Aid scheme, anybody currently paying personal UK income tax or capital gains tax, can opt to have the value of their donation increased by 25% from the UK government.
About the Centre
Tan-y-Garth Hall Retreat is a centre for the study, research, teaching and dissemination of; spiritual, psychological, scientific and creative knowledge, in an open and inclusive environment. It aims to provide people with practical opportunities to explore and apply such works to improving spiritual and physical wellbeing.
The centre is owned and run by the International Hermeneutic Society (IHS), a UK registered charity. It was established 50 years ago by Khen Ratcliffe and his Liverpool based yoga group and pioneered the teaching of yoga in both the eastern and western traditions.
The building is an outstanding example of Arts and Crafts architecture and is Grade II listed. It sits within 13 acres of woodland on a garden terrace with commanding views over the Ceriog Valley in North Wales, some twenty miles south of Chester. This makes it very well situated for its role as a peaceful residential centre for weekend retreats, away from the stresses of modern urban life.
