From a very young age, I was interested in doing hair and makeup. I am so grateful to have a mother who allowed me to have autonomy over my hair and nourished my love for my hair. I learned to do my own hair at a young age, and once I started experimenting with color my passion grew stronger and stronger over time.
During my high school years, I was in color guard, and that is when I recognized my passion for hair and makeup. Particularly during my junior and senior years, I was the “Rookie Rep” and my role was to essentially take the new members under my wing and guide them through all the ins and outs of the color guard. My absolute favorite part of this role was that most of them had never done their own hair or makeup, and so that gave me an opportunity to show them how to do their hair and makeup. In doing so, I could see their self-confidence boosting, and knowing that I helped them get there was so fulfilling. To most people, it’s such a small thing to love one's appearance, but to young girls it is everything. I became the go-to person for a handful of the kids and that was something I will always cherish in my heart.
I graduated from high school in 2020, and my senior year was cut short. When I realized we weren’t getting just 2 weeks off of school, that gave me a chance to dig in and experiment with my hair again truly, and I fell so much more in love with hair than I was before. Since the shops were closed my brothers and mom let me start cutting their hair as well, and I realized it had become more than just cutting hair for me. It became something I truly enjoyed doing with my time, and I found myself counting down the days until when one of them would need another haircut.
I know that hair is something that I really flourish with, bringing joy to people and helping them.
After help with financial aid, I still have $10,000 of uncovered fees that I need help with. I am asking for your support to help me follow my dream of becoming a cosmetologist.
