Homelessness Will Never Happen to Me…

How many times have you passed by a homeless person and said to yourself…Homelessness Will Never Happen to Me… I can assure you that every one of the 50+ homeless people in Taos County, the 17,000 homeless people in New Mexico and the 1.7 million homeless people nationwide- that’s men, women & children (23%) also said, prior to becoming homeless… Homelessness Will Never Happen to Me…

The mission of the Taos Coalition to End Homelessness is to operate the Taos Men’s Shelter.  We are the only men’s shelter serving northern New Mexico and as such, draw men in need from a rather large region.  We provide a warm bed, dinners prepared by a group of individual donors, showers, laundry, and an experienced staff that get to know the men and direct them to any agency or function that may help to improve their circumstances.

The Shelter is open from 6pm to 8am, but our staff often puts in uncompensated daytime hours in order to assist clients with their needs.  Our goal is to provide a clean and safe haven for men in need, and to guide them in any way possible towards improvement.

In addition to helping the men, the Shelter provides important community services.  We are a resource for the police department, churches, hospitals, addiction service providers and mental health agencies all of which encounter men who have nowhere else to go.  Not only is our Shelter one of the most effective solutions, it can save public funding by avoiding the expenses of incarceration and emergency room care.

In 2015, we are looking to upgrade some of our existing shelter furniture- couches, dining tables & chairs, mattresses, all of which have seen much better days, and add services that include job search training, resume writing and health services. We have also created a Shared Living Supportive Housing Program that helps move our men from homelessness to housed (www.taosaffordablerentals.com/SharedLiving-Taos.pdf), which only costs $2,000 per man - total! (please the see above link for cost breakdown)

HELP US HELP THEM

While we get grants from both the Town of Taos and Taos County, along with grants from various foundations, we receive no state or federal monies. As such, we have to rely on the kindness and generosity of people like you. The ongoing generosity of the people of Taos, while very substantial, is no longer sufficient to cover the costs of operating the shelter and paying our dedicated staff.

Thank you,
