Honoring Lengendary Bill Armstrong

Donation protected
Celebrating our history inspires us as a people to make every effort to reach our fullest potential and to pull others along with us. Compton High School has had so many untold stories...successful students and staff. Bill Armstrong is one of them. One of the most legendary coaching figures in California high school sports history. No one comes close to having the record of accomplishments that Coach Armstrong has, appearing in a record 14 league championships and winning 12, six C.I.F Southern Section Championships, 2 National Championships and becoming the only coach in the history of the C.I.F to have undefeated back to back seasons with a record of 66 victories without a loss. A state record that still stands today. In 1997 he was included as a charter member of the first California High School Sports Hall of Fame, a major staple of the Cal-Hi Sports Record Book & Almanac.  I urge you to join with CUSD Alumni, civic leaders, Community Based Organizations and others in honoring our rich history by supporting this campaign.

At the time of his passing in 2013 at the age of 85, Armstrong was listed as the sixth winningest coach in state history. I was privileged to not only play for Armstrong but to learn from him on and off the court.

The Compton Recognition Advisory Committee led a group of Compton High alumni, residents, and stakeholders  in successfully petitioning the Compton Unified School District to recognize the incredible contributions of the late Bill Armstrong by dedicating the Compton High gym floor in his honor.

The Board of Trustees of the Compton Unified School District committed to placing the name on the gym floor in March  2016,  at the first opportunity. The district is prohibited by law from expending public funds toward putting Bill Armstrong's name on the floor.

The Citizen Advisory Committee is charged with providing the Compton Unified School District payment now to cover the cost of the actual work of putting the name on the floor. The most recent quote was $3000.  We are seeking the support of former players, alumni, and other interested persons. Contributions can also be made anonymously or by mail to Michael L  Hopwood P.O. Box 4052 Lakewood, ca 90711.
