Teacher of the Year to Bangladesh

Donation protected
Hello! My name is Brett Bigham and I am the 2014 Oregon State Teacher of the Year. I'm really proud to be the only special education teacher in my state to be given this recognition. I was recently contacted by Asha Inc (Asha means hope in Bangladesh) to go to Bangladesh and work with the first Special Education teachers in the country. Kids with special needs are usually not educated in this country and are often seen as contagious. These two schools are shifting how the country views their people with special needs. I want to do everything I can to support them!

I will be traveling to Bangladesh to spend two and half weeks at the two schools that are now including kids with special needs. I will then travel across country to support teachers at a school for homeless slum children and will finally visit a school for children who have been saved from human trafficking.

I want to show these kids they are loved and that they matter. To do that I am going in person to help their schools. I'm a substitute teacher this year and our money is tight so I'm pretty limited money wise. I want to show up with supplies for these kids. I want to make sure they are eating.

I am going to ask all of my friends to donate the cost of tomorrow's Starbucks, or their lunch for me to buy supplies for these four schools while I am visiting.  If I get a couple hundred of dollars I'll buy as many supplies as I can. If I get a couple of thousand, I'll help pay for school meals and set up the special ed program with physical therapy equipment and adapted furniture so kids with special needs can participate one hundred percent.

My hope is this. By bringing an outpouring of love onto these schools who have decided to help the most vulnerable  children in their society, we can change the system in Bangladesh. Perhaps another school will open their doors to all children. And then another. And another.

In March I will be heading to Bangladesh to do my very best to make a difference in the lives of many children. Please help me in that endeavor.

The schools are funded by Asha-Inc. If you want to read up about them and the schools I will be visiting, please check their websitehttps://www.asha-inc.org/morningstar-program.html

Brett Bigham (me) is a teacher in Portland, Oregon. I'm proud to be a recipient of the NEA National Award for Teaching Excellence (the only Oregon Special ed teacher to win this award) and to named an NEA Foundation Global Fellow twice. I will travel to South Africa with this program in July to work with teachers and students there.  If you want any more of my resume to make sure I'm trustworthy, I'd be happy to share!
