School Teacher’s Plight: Fighting, Enduring and Overcoming the Big C for Her Beloved Family and Pupils’ Sake

Ms. Virginia Ibrao, single, 41 years young, is a diligent, hardworking, and passionate school teacher at a Philippine Department of Education public elementary school in a rural village of Tondod in San Jose City, Nueva Ecija Province in Central Luzon Region. She currently handles six sections from Grade 4 through Grade 6 where she nurtures and educates over 200 students. Ma’am Virgie, as she’s fondly called by her beloved students, lIves in the same village (Tondod) with her parents and siblings. Her father who passed away at 65 owing to illness in November, 2023 was a rice farmer, while her mother manages their household of four sons and two daughters. Virgie is the eldest and is the only professional in the family. As such, she selflessly served her family as the main breadwinner.

Virgie willingly withstood all the rigors of teaching and cherishing such daunting number of students every year for the past ten years since 2013. Unfortunately, in early 2023 she was diagnosed to have Stage 3 breast cancer. Albeit this life-threatening condition, she continued to soldier on with her teaching duties while undergoing chemotherapy. These periodic medical treatments have taken a toll not only on her health but also her and her family’s finances. Nevertheless, she doesn’t want to give up fighting against the Big C, hoping against hope despite the pain, agony, and tears, that she would survive and be able to teach her pupils again and help tide over her family.

Virgie already has incurred loans for her treatment and sooner than later might run out of cash for her chemotherapy sessions and the tumor removal operation thereafter.
