Team #42 Air Race Classic 2022

Third time's a charm, it seems, with the Air Race Classic! Being able to race has been pushed back a couple of years due to Covid, and now it's finally happening!

 

I am raising money to help offset the cost of competing in the 2022 Women's Air Race Classic. The ARC began in 1929 as the Women's Air Derby (aka the Powder Puff Derby), in which 20 women pilots, including Amelia Earhart, raced from Santa Monica, California, to Cleveland, Ohio. The ARC is still today quintessential of women's air racing as the ultimate test of piloting skill and aviation decision-making (ADM). 

I am racing to promote not only women in aviation, but also to encourage STEM education and involvement for women and girls everywhere. I am happy to join this year with my race partner, Willy Mattock, in her Cherokee 140.

The 2022 Air Race Classic covers nearly 2500 miles, not including the travel to and from the start and terminus. We estimate that we will need to cover approximately $12,000 in costs, including fuel, oil, maintenance, lodging, registration fees, event fees, food, etc.

 

The aviation industry, since its onset, has been dominated by men. Even today, only 9% of pilots are women. Even less than that continue on to achieve their Airline Transport Pilot Certification, with less than 5% of pilots holding an ATP being women. As a woman in this industry, the journey is exciting, challenging, and complex, just as it is for any aspiring pilot; however, being a woman has its own unique challenges. The more we can demonstrate to other women and girls the possibilities the aviation industry has to offer, the more significant the impact we’ll have for generations to come.

With avgas prices now suddenly way above what was initially estimated a few years ago, I'm trying to raise a bit more to help get us over the hump to cover parts of our race. I would also love to create a scholarship in the near future to award to a girl, woman, or ally working toward a pilot certificate or rating!
