Team Blake! As many of you know Blake has had many issues since he was born at 28 weeks. Weighing in at a little over a pound., Blake entered the world! He was immediately put on a ventilator and graduated to a CPAP in order to give him oxygen. At one week old, Blake had to undergo heart surgery to repair a hole in his heart and lack of proper blood flow. The surgery repaired his heart but did end up compromising one of his vocal cords. He spent 4 1/2 months in the NICU and was given a prognosis to never walk or talk. With determination from his parents and several surgeries, doctor appointments, PT, OT and speech therapy....Blake overcame his prognosis, and walks and talks !
Unfortunately Blake has never been able to sleep more than a couple of hours at a time due to his airway closing from the paralyzed vocal cord, which causes him to stop breathing. Luckily, his body reacts and wakes him up, but not being fully rested will cause issues with his mental and physical development and he will likely develop lung and heart issues as early as his teen years.
With much thought and several professional opinions, Blakes Mom and Dad have decided to have Blake undergo airway reconstructive surgery in Cincinnati OH and will be there for over a month.
WEEK ONE:
They will open the airway by taking a piece of his rib and grafting it to the vocal cord that does not work. Blake will be in the high risk airway unit for the first week after surgery and kept sedated and on a ventilator in order for the graft to take.
WEEK TWO:
Blake will step down to ICU
WEEK THREE:
Blake will move to a regular hospital room
WEEK FOUR:
With no complications Blake could head home!
With all of this being said, I have a BIG ASK, Terri and Norm do not know about this request. Myself along with Blake's Aunt Robin Stenson started this campaign to help alleviate some of the medical costs. Along with your prayers we are also trying to raise money to help with the expenses they will incur while being away from home. In addition to there normal expenses, they will be paying for 30 days of a hotel stay, food and medical expenses. Once all is done, he will need to be go back to Cincinnatti for follow up appointments.
Blake has overcome many obstacles as you all know in his short life, except this airway issue. Anything you can offer will be a great help and much appreciated. Robin Stenson will present a check to Terri and Norm on July 1st with all of the funds collected. This will also include a card for Blake with all donor names listed.
Thank you for your support and prayers!
