Responding to Crisis
“In every war, the ones who suffer the most are children.”
A huge thank you to all of you that supported our team’s 24-hour row fundraiser for King’s College, Thomas Cook Children’s Critical Care Centre!
In the current climate, we find ourselves once again wanting to support children in need, but this time, a little further away. Our small team will be swapping rowers for stairs as we embark on a 24-hour climb to raise money for Save the Children. Every penny will go towards the charity's Emergency Gaza Appeal.
The unfolding crisis in the Middle East is complex and far precedes this Autumn. Providing urgent relief to children most in need is, as ever, paramount.
The challenge
Where: St Andrew's Youth Club
When: December 30th, 2023
The event will take place at St. Andrew’s Youth Club, using our handy, 5-floor stairwell, with at least one team member climbing at all times, over a period of 24-hours. Only incline stairs count towards the overall step count; no cheating, no elevators, no naps!
There will be a range of dumbbells and kettle bells for some of our brave climbers that wish to add an extra layer of challenge to the fundraiser!
Venture a guess as to how many times our team will collectively climb the equivalent of the world's highest tower, the Burj Khalifa, which is a staggering 160 floors (2,909 stairs)!
Save the Children
The teams at Save the Children charity will provide lifesaving support to the children and families of Gaza, with responses including:
- distributing supplies, such as water, food, toiletries, cooking utensils, and other household essentials
- delivering mental health and psychosocial support services for children and caregivers
- setting up child friendly spaces so that children have a safe space to play and recover
- distributing warm clothes and blankets, as well as cash and vouchers so that families can buy food, medicines, etc.
- providing fuel and water infrastructure for hospitals and distributing water storage tanks
- ensuring that children continue to have access to education by setting up temporary learning spaces and repairing damaged schools
- identifying the most at-risk children for referrals to protection related services
- deploying their Emergency Health Unit and procuring essential medical equipment
Save the Children is also responding to escalating needs in Lebanon, and gearing up their teams across the region to prepare for any rise in children's needs as the situation evolves.
Additional commentary from our team
We would like all of our readers, followers and supporters to know that we heartily understand the historical complexity of many aspects of this conflict. We also know that the pain inflicted by this war is felt globally.
Our hearts are with all innocent civilians and the loved ones of, that have suffered and are suffering.
We as a team together with the Save the Children charity, vehemently condemn the killing of all civilians, including children, regardless of nationality, race or religion.
Our hopes and prayers are ultimately for peace and in the meantime, we aim to make a contribution, however small, to support civilian children and families victimised by this war.
