On February 18th, our father Donnie Lyons was on his way to the post office, when he got out of his vehicle and found that he couldn't make it to the door. He proceeded to go to the hospital where they ran tests. The doctors told him that his pacemaker/defibrillator was no longer working and there was nothing they could do.
Our father, now 52 and suffering from heart failure for the last 12 years, was able to be stabilized over the course of a week by the healthcare providers at UPMC Pinnacle Harrisburg before his transfer to Hershey Medical Center for further care. At this facility, they were able to run tests to see what other options they could possibly proceed with. After testing and monitoring for a little more than a week, the surgeons determined that open-heart surgery, with the placement of an LVAD was the best immediate option. An LVAD, or Left Ventricular Assist Device, is a kind of mechanical heart pump that is placed inside a person's chest to aid the heart in pumping oxygen-rich blood throughout the body.
On March 5th, our father had this life saving procedure that will buy more time for him until we can find a suitable donor heart. Within the week following his surgery, our family started to see improvement in not only his health, but also in his spirit.
Our father is now currently at a rehabilitation center, in which once he leaves, he will return home and be taken care of by our mother who will be his permanent care taker for the next 3 months. After our father's month long stay in facilities, our mother has expunged all of her time off work. She will also have to be off of work for the next 3 months, in which she will not receive a paycheck during this time.
With the recent arrival of, and the expectation of more medical bills, with no income, we are asking that you help join us in helping supporting our parents through these tough times. Any donation amount would be a blessing and truly appreciated.
