Support Jeremy's Fight Against Cancer

On December 30, 2021, Jeremy and his husband Scott were looking forward to celebrating New Year’s Eve with friends. That day, however, took an unexpected turn. Jeremy was diagnosed with Cutaneous T-Cell Lymphoma, a rare and aggressive form of Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma.

Many people think Jeremy is done with his treatment because he reports positive results and can enjoy more freedom, but that is not accurate. He still has a long road ahead of him.

Jeremy’s treatment journey has been incredibly challenging. He’s undergone multiple rounds of chemotherapy, infusions of medication, and two types of radiation. In March 2023, he had his first stem cell transplant. To prepare, he endured additional chemotherapy to destroy his immune system, followed by more chemo. Initially, he stayed in a hotel with Scott but had to move to inpatient care due to complications. Although the transplant initially seemed promising, it ultimately failed.

Jeremy then received a second transplant with his sister as the donor, requiring a three-week hospital stay with limited visitation. Scott was provided with multiple manuals detailing precise instructions on food preparation, storage, and disposal, as well as how to monitor Jeremy's diet and side effects. The manuals also explained graft-versus-host disease (GVHD), a condition where donor cells attack the recipient's body, potentially affecting every system. They outlined what to watch for and how to respond quickly to any signs of GVHD. Scott had to accompany Jeremy to most of his appointments while managing his own business with reduced hours.

Jeremy’s treatment has prevented him from working. Physically, he often felt weak, struggled with "chemo brain," and had to be extremely cautious with his compromised immune system. Despite these efforts, Jeremy has faced numerous setbacks, including liver failure caused by donor cells attacking his body.

While Jeremy’s skin has improved, and he can now venture out a bit more, he still requires constant vigilance. Scott’s mother passed away in October, and even attending her funeral had to be meticulously planned to ensure Jeremy's safety.

The treatment journey is far from over. Jeremy still needs most of his immunizations and remains at risk for graft-versus-host disease. Although they are less isolated, they continue to live cautiously, much like during the height of COVID-19. The challenges have been near-constant, requiring continuous planning and adjustments. Jeremy’s rare cancer and its complications mean that every step is uncertain and requires careful management.
