Team Mazza!

In April 2019, our dear friend Peter Mazza, 41, learned that he has stage IV colon cancer. Pete is in for a tough fight but there is hope and Pete has hope.
As friends of Pete, we have banded together to help him, Megan, their three children and extended family while he fights his disease. In addition to the physical and emotional fight, Pete's diagnosis means that the Mazza family is now facing a large amount of unanticipated medical, childcare, and other related expenses. Pete and Megan's family do not live locally and will be traveling and/or relocating to San Diego for the foreseeable future to help provide day-to-day support for the Mazza family until Pete recovers.
Everyone who has crossed paths with Pete from his days in Cheshire to Yale and Michigan, and in San Diego for the last 15 years, knows that he is a remarkable guy. Loving husband. Amazing father. Caring son and brother. Michigan Law School grad. Captain of the 2000 Yale Football Team. Currently the First Assistant U.S. Attorney in San Diego and former Partner at Jones Day. Pete is pretty much amazing at everything he does (other than dancing - ha, sorry, Pete, had to be said!).
At a wedding that he officiated, Pete described a strong marriage not as one with two people gazing starry-eyed into each other's eyes, but rather two people standing side-by-side, shoulder-to-shoulder, in the trenches, pulling together at the same time in the same direction at all times. And throughout the years, Pete has stood shoulder-to-shoulder with so many of us - family, friends, teammates, and colleagues - through good times and difficult ones.
Now's our chance to return the favor and stand shoulder-to-shoulder with Pete.
To that end, we are seeking donations to help the Mazza family defray medical expenses, increased childcare costs, family travel and lodging costs, and other expenses related to Pete's treatment and diagnosis. This assistance is all the more important in light of Pete being asked to return to government service only a few months before learning of his diagnosis. Needless to say, such expenses were not in the Mazza family’s budget when he accepted the position as First Assistant in the U.S. Attorney’s Office. We estimate that over the first year of Pete's treatment, these increased expenses will exceed $75,000.
If you are receiving this, you know Pete and Megan well. And you also know that a request like this is not something they agreed to without considerable reservation. Nonetheless, they cherish the outpouring of love and support that has already come their way and recognize that many of you—their good friends—want to help further.
Pete asked that we make clear to everyone that any money donated will only be used for expenses related to his care and treatment. Further, he respectfully asks that this appeal not find its way on to any social media or be shared with folks who do not know him. In Pete’s words, he does not “want this turning into a ‘Save Ferris’-type thing.”
Thank you all so very much in advance as we band together to help Pete, Megan, and their family during this trying time.
