Important Change to Gofundme Fundraising for Melissa Carleton -- Please Read Carefully
Back in March (2016) Lawanna and I set up a Gofundme page to raise money to help with our move, as we had to short sale our home and move to a different home. Many people were very generous, and we thankfully and gratefully received over $7,000. We could not have moved without it. We have left the link on Facebook at Support Melissa Carleton. I just changed the name to “Team Melissa Carleton.”
As a family, we have been transitioning over the last several months, as Melissa’s husband, Brian, has himself been transitioning to a life wherein he and Melissa’s marriage will be dissolved. Suffice it to say that movement toward dissolution and all its ramifications is ongoing in a normal pace. We suspect that by the spring (2017) it should be final, and we will then move on with the next stage of our lives.
As with all such dissolutions, financial matters are included. As we move into the position of being responsible for all of Melissa’s out-of-pocket expenses, and Lawanna moves into the position of being Melissa’s conservator, and after the financial settlement of the dissolution, which will include setting up a special needs trust for Melissa with the remainder of the Gofundme money contributed over the last 2.5 years, we need to also set up a new Gofundme mechanism for future contributions. That will be, from now on, “Team Melissa Carleton.” The old site, “Team Melissa: Mom Slowly Improving,” will be discontinued in the next few days. Please make any future contributions to "Team Melissa Carleton." I have already taken the link off our “Support Melissa Carleton” FB page. Roughly half of the just over $155,000 raised so far remains, over which Brian has had complete control and administration, and will be placed in the trust. Our hope is that this money will last us 3-5 years. Should, God forbid, Melissa die before the money is gone, the remainder will be set aside for West, to be available after he comes of age. But we also want to have a continuous opportunity for people to contribute to. “Team Melissa Carleton” is now operational, and can be found by clicking the link on Support Melissa Carleton on FB in the “About” section.
Our effort here is to be as transparent and honest as possible.
As always, thank you for whatever consideration you have for us and give to us. We will continue, as we always have, to be the best stewards of Melissa as we can.
Grace, Peace, and Love
