Team Monocles - Applying AI & Problem Solving to Cold Cases

In the Fall of 2022, the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) Homicide Branch engaged with Ron Brumbarger to apply innovative methodologies and technologies to a twenty-four-year-old unsolved homicide. This effort came on the heels of a similar partnership a few years earlier involving a different unsolved homicide with the intent to build upon some of the lessons learned. As with that prior endeavor, Ron’s team had access to the actual case file to study and develop an action plan.

After some starts and stops with different teams and members, in 2024, the final eight members were locked in, and Team Monocles was born! This group contained a wide range of skill sets and life experiences, but all were thoroughly focused and dedicated to the mission before them. Once they agreed on their self-imposed deadline of four months, they set about a division of labor that made sense based on their interests and areas of expertise.

This exciting project concluded in the fall of 2024 and Team Monocles released a whitepaper on the work available at Team Monocles' website. There is much more work to do in the development and application of AI to aid law enforcement in bringing hope, healing, resolution, and justice for the families of victims while holding perpetrators accountable.
