TEAM OISIN: You can help save Oisin’s life

Dear loved ones, friends, supporters…

Thank you all for your ongoing love, support, energy, and for showing up for Oisin and his family since the devastating DIPG inoperable brain tumour diagnosis in early 2022. Individuals suffering from DIPG face a dismal prognosis with a median overall survival of approximately 11 months, and a 2-year survival rate of 10%. Long-term survival is very rare.

We have an opportunity to change this for Oisin, who turned 7 in February 2022, and other children diagnosed with this devastating disease. There has been an exciting medical development, which has the potential to save Oisin’s life!

Oisin has been admitted to the groundbreaking SonALAsense clinical trial. He will be one of the first paediatric patients in the world, with the DIPG tumour, to receive this innovative, science-based treatment.

After 30 years of research and development, the SonALAsense clinical trial (more info: https://sonalasense.com/) focuses on a tumour-targeting drug (SONALA-001) together with MRI-guided focused ultrasound as sonodynamic therapy (SDT), to create cell death in the tumour in this non-invasive approach to cancer treatment. Never before has there been any way to target the DIPG tumour directly, and cross the blood-brain barrier to deliver life-saving treatment.

We are grateful to the Washington National Children’s Hospital team caring for Oisin and conducting the medical clinical trial. We are also tremendously thankful for the ongoing support and care of our team at Toronto’s SickKids Hospital and the incredible care Oisin received this past spring 2022 at Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital.

Oisin, and his parents, Ali and Ciara, are heading to Washington, D.C., on two trips in August and September 2022, so Oisin can participate in the SonALAsense medical clinical trial.

There are many costs associated with travel, logistics, staying in Washington, D.C. for an extended period, and taking part in the trial, none of which are covered by Ontario health care coverage, or any medical insurance at this time.
